TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – PSSI Chair Erick Thohir reminds the Indonesian national team not to be quick to be satisfied after defeating Saudi Arabia in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asian zone. The Garuda squad is asked not to be complacent in the remaining four games.
Indonesia recorded a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the sixth match of Group C. Both goals were scored by Marselino Ferdinan. This result led the team under Shin Tae-yong to rise from the bottom of the group to third place.
The success of Jay Idzes and his teammates in overcoming Saudi Arabia, ranked 59th, led Indonesia to climb in the FIFA rankings. According to calculations by football-ranking.com, this victory will boost Indonesia’s position from 130th to 125th in the world. The world football federation will announce the latest FIFA rankings on November 28th.
The remaining four matches for Indonesia in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia will begin in March next year, with two home and two away matches.
Indonesia will first play an away match against Australia on March 20, 2025, followed by hosting Bahrain five days later. After that, the Garuda squad will face China at home on June 5, 2025, followed by a match against the host country Japan five days later.
“The victory against Saudi Arabia should be appreciated, but it is not yet time to be satisfied because the journey is still long,” said Erick through his official Instagram post uploaded on Sunday evening, November 24, 2024, as reported by Antara.
“The chance to qualify for the next round is open once again. We must not be complacent in the next four matches to keep Garuda’s hopes alive to appear on the world stage,” he added.
The victory over Saudi Arabia earned Indonesia six points from six matches played. These six points were obtained from three draws and one win.
Indonesia is in third place below Japan, who are at the top of Group C with 16 points, and Australia, who are one point ahead. The points collected by Garuda are the same as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China below them.
PSSI has tasked coach Shin Tae-yong with the target of ensuring that the Indonesian national team finishes in the top four of Group C to qualify for the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia.
