The two-week Fifa break has proven beneficial for Royal AM (RAM), giving the team a chance to recharge, reflect, and prepare for the challenges ahead, according to head coach John Maduka.
Maduka highlighted that the break provided an opportunity for players to rest, play friendly matches, and ensure the squad remained sharp.
While the friendlies against lower-division teams Mkhambathini FC and Newcastle United FC (Safa) were not of the same standard as Betway Premiership matches, they served an important purpose.

“These are lower-division sides, but it was a good exercise,” said Maduka. “Those two friendlies were tough in their way, and we used them to give all players a chance to express themselves without the pressure of playing against PSL opponents.
“We essentially fielded two different teams in one game to ensure everyone got a fair opportunity to take the field.”
The coach also noted the technical benefits of the friendlies, explaining that they allowed the team to test new strategies and refine their approach.
“The break gave us time to scrutinise the technical side of our game and try out new tactics. These games were not just about staying fit but also about learning what works,” he added.

However, Maduka acknowledged the risks associated with extended breaks, including the possibility of players losing their sharpness. “While the pause was good, it can cause players to become rusty if not managed carefully. That’s why maintaining focus during the break was crucial,” he said.
Royal AM will return to competitive action on Tuesday when they host neighbours and arch-rivals Golden Arrows at Harry Gwala Stadium. The much-anticipated KZN derby is set for a 7.30 pm kickoff.
Maduka said local derbies were always unpredictable and full of fireworks, with home-ground advantage offering only a slight edge.
We are ready and have prepared very well, but it’s going to be a tough game. It’s a KZN derby, so it will be highly competitive. While playing at home and in front of our supporters gives us some advantage, we know it will be challenging for both teams
Tickets for the match are available through TicketPro and at outlets such as Edgars, Edgars Active, CNA, Jet Mart, Caltex, Engen, and Spar. Tickets are priced at R60 each.
