The Buckeyes are officially the No.1 team headed into the NCAA tournament.
After defeating the Michigan Wolverines 1-0 Sunday, Ohio State claimed the Big Ten Tournament title Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Now, the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes have a first-round bye in the 2024 NCAA Division I Tournament, which kicks off Thursday.
The Buckeyes’ next game will unfold 5 p.m. Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The team’s opponent will be determined by the outcome of a 1 p.m. Thursday matchup between Western Michigan and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Ohio State head coach Brian Maisonneuve said he’s entering the tournament proud of his team’s performance this season, and feels confident in his players’ ability to perform at the highest level.
“It’s a special group,” Maisonneuve said. “We knew what we had in the room, and they played up to their potential. So, I’m excited for the tournament, excited for these guys to get back at it on Sunday.”
2024 marks the fourth time Ohio State has won the Big Ten Tournament, with its most recent victory being under former head coach John Bluem in 2009. The Buckeyes are also returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022 and the 12th time in program history.
Defender Nathan Demian said he’s looking forward to competing in the tournament, especially because his team’s next match will take place on the Buckeyes’ home turf.
“I’m very excited,” Demian said. “I love playing at the Jesse Owens; when you come to Ohio State, that’s what you want. When you come to the NCAA, you want to get home games.”
