20th November 2024 – (Buenos Aires) Argentina secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Peru in their World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday, thanks to a spectacular second-half volley from Lautaro Martinez. The Inter Milan striker broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, executing a bicycle kick from a Lionel Messi cross that soared into the top-right corner of the net.
Following the opening goal, the reigning world champions maintained control of the match, comfortably clinching their eighth victory in the qualifying campaign. With this win, Argentina sits firmly at the top of the South American group, accumulating 25 points from 12 matches. In contrast, Peru languishes at the bottom of the table with just seven points.
“It makes me happy to know that we’ve finished the year on a positive note and as leaders,” Martinez remarked after the match. The 27-year-old forward expressed his satisfaction with his personal achievements over the year but emphasised his commitment to continuous improvement. “It’s been a great year personally, but I want to keep working hard to improve every day,” he added.
