PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett girls soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season on Tuesday with a 4-1 win over Jack Britt in a home United-8 Conference matchup on Friday.
Kyndallon Oxendine scored two goals for Purnell Swett (12-1, 8-1 United-8 Conference) in Friday’s game. Josie McLean had one goal and two assists, Wren Jacobs had one goal and Anyssia Mains and Brooklyn Jones each had one assist.
The Rams lost 1-0 to Cape Fear on Tuesday, snapping an 11-game winning streak to start the season. Purnell Swett and Cape Fear are currently in a loss-column tie for first in the conference.
Jack Britt is 7-6-2 overall and 5-4 in the United-8.
Purnell Swett will face Lumberton in the Robeson Cup championship game Saturday, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. at Red Springs. Red Springs and St. Pauls will meet in the third-place game at noon.
Lady Rams beat Buccaneers
The Purnell Swett softball team earned a 14-6 win over Jack Britt in Thursday’s United-8 Conference home game.
Jack Britt (5-11, 3-7 United-8) scored five runs in the second and one in the third. Purnell Swett (8-10, 6-6 United-8) responded to the Buccaneers’ big second inning with a seven-run bottom half, then scored five in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Jayla Graham had two hits and four RBIs for the Rams. Chloe Chavis had three hits and Sonata Oxendine had two. The Rams totaled seven walks, including two each by Alexa Lowery and Nylah Johnson.
Kamryn Locklear eared the win, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. Katee Villareal was the losing pitcher for the Buccaneers.
Purnell Swett also defeated Seventy-First 18-3 on Friday; further details were unavailable at press time.
St. Pauls baseball falls at Union Pines
The St.Pauls baseball team fell on the road in nonconference action Thursday night when they traveled to face the Union Pines Vikings. The Bulldogs managed to keep things close early in the game before the Vikings put on an offensive showing taking the 16-4 win in five innings.
The Vikings (9-9) got things going first in the bottom half of the inning when Jacob Williams brought two runners home with an RBI single to make it 2-0 early. The Vikings added to their lead on a hit by pitch with bases loaded. After two scoreless innings and down 3-0, Jaylen Jacobs hits a solo home run over the center field wall to put St. Pauls (5-12) on the board.
An RBI double from Jaden Parker a few batters later managed to cut the Vikings lead to 3-2. The Bulldogs managed to take the lead in the third with an RBI single from Joshua Garner.
Down 4-3, the Vikings took the lead on back-to-back hit batsmen with the bases loaded, putting Union Pines back in front 5-4. The Vikings then would flip the script on the Bulldogs and plate eight runs before closing out the third with a 13-4 lead.
The Vikings finished off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a home run from Austin Mooring and a RBI single from Brodie Lyczkowski making it 16-4 and closing things out in the fifth for the win.
Jacobs and Joshua Garner each had two hits for St. Pauls, with Garner adding two RBIs.
Cameron McNeill got the start for the Bulldogs and went 2 1/3 innings pitches giving up six hits and nine runs walking two and striking out one.
The Bulldogs defeated West Bladen 6-5 on Friday; further details were unavailable at press time.
