Eduardo Vargas, the scorer of “La Roja” and the key to win the match against Peru, will try to score again with his country after the bad image in the Copa América and the last matches of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers. In this tournament he has scored two goals in four games played. At local level he did not have a high level in the last time, but he has been part of Atlético Mineiro, finalist of the Copa Libertadores. However, he also lost the final of the Brazilian Cup against Flamengo with a 4-1 aggregate score. This season he has seven goals, all in the Brasileirao, and two assists in 33 total appearances.
Miguel Araujo, scorer of the team’s only goal in these CONMEBOL qualifiers, will be looking not only to keep a clean sheet but, why not, to dream of scoring again. The 30-year-old defender, in only five games played, scored the goal in the victory against Uruguay on date 9 of this tournament. In addition to giving the three points to the “Bicolor”, that sacred cry was the first in his career with the jersey of his national team. Throughout his career, he scored 18 goals and provided 11 assists in 352 total appearances.
These two teams have met 80 times over the years in CONMEBOL Qualifying and Copa América matches. Of the total, Chile won 46, Peru won 24 times and the remaining 15 ended in draws. The last previous meeting was on June 21 of this year in the group stage of the continental competition and, at the AT&T Stadium, the final score was 0-0.
On the other hand, the “Roja” also arrives in a very bad moment, but even with two victories and the results of the other matches in their favor, they cannot reach the playoffs of these CONMEBOL Qualifiers. With only five points, they are at the bottom of the table after one win, two draws and seven defeats. After the very bad performance in the Copa América, being eliminated in the group stage without victories, what came after was worse since they lost in the four matches they played. Ricardo Gareca’s cycle is on the ropes and needs these three points to gain some air.
The “Bicolor” is in a bad moment with quite negative results and will try to take advantage of this opportunity to get out of the bottom and, at least, get closer to the playoff position with the dream of qualifying to the next World Cup. With six points, they are second to last after one win, three draws and six defeats. The team that is in the playoffs has 12 points, so it is impossible for them to reach it, but with good results in this double FIFA date they can equal it. After a bad performance in the Copa América with two draws and a loss, the first two matches after that were not good, but they got a very important win against Uruguay. However, it comes after being thrashed 4-0 by Brazil.
The match between Peru vs Chile for the eleventh date of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers will take place at the National Stadium of Lima, popularly known as Estadio José Díaz, Estadio Nacional de Perú or simply Estadio Nacional, located in the Santa Beatriz urbanization, in the district of Lima, homonymous city, capital of Peru. It has a maximum capacity of up to 43,086 spectators.
