13th November 2024 – (Bogota) Juventus full-back Juan Cabal has been sidelined from Colombia’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Ecuador due to a knee injury, the Colombian Football Federation announced on Tuesday.
Cabal, 23, sustained the injury during a training session with the national team on Monday. The federation did not specify whether a replacement would be called up to join the Cafeteros.
Colombia is set to face Uruguay in Montevideo on Friday, followed by a match against Ecuador in Barranquilla four days later. Currently, Nestor Lorenzo’s side sits second in the 10-team South American qualifying zone with 19 points, trailing only Argentina, who leads with 22 points.
Uruguay occupies third place with 16 points, while Ecuador is fifth with 13 points. The top six teams in the qualifying round will secure automatic spots for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
