One of the top Class 2A programs in the state will begin its search for a new head football coach.
Decatur Heritage coach Nikita Stover has stepped down as the program’s head coach after three seasons, he announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
“This was not an easy decision, but I believe it is the right time for myself to venture into new opportunities,” he wrote in the post. “I have personal goals and achievements that I want to see through, and I know a shift needs to happen in order to obtain them. Coaching this team has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together—the hard work, growth, and resilience each player has shown both on and off the field."
Stover, who was hired ahead of the 2022 season, compiled a 20-11 record as the program’s head coach, leading the Eagles to a 9-2 record in 2023 and a 7-3 finish this season.
Decatur Heritage finished ranked No. 8 in Class 2A in the final high school football rankings from the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
The coach led the program to a Class 1A, Region 7 title in 2023 and went 10-1 in region play in the last two seasons.

The team made the playoffs in the last two seasons, falling in the first round to Winterboro in 2023 and to Susan Moore to end the 2024 season in the first round.
“I will always be grateful for DHCA for taking a chance on me as being a first time Head Football Coach,” he wrote. “My gratitude is unmeasured. Thank you to the players, staff, administration, and the incredible fans who have shown unwavering support. I am confident that the team’s future is bright, and I look forward to watching you all continue to succeed.”
Stover, a Hartselle High alum, was an All-State wide receiver with the Tigers and played for the University of Alabama.
