BELLEVILLE, Mich. – Connor Stalions, the former Michigan football analyst at the heart of the program‘s sign-stealing saga, is now coaching the top recruit in the country and Michigan’s primary quarterback target, Bryce Underwood.
Local 4 confirmed that Stalions has been hired as a coach at Belleville High School. Stalions spent the regular season as the head coach of Mumford High School in Detroit, but he has since joined Belleville as a play caller for the playoffs.
Stalions was on the coaching staff for most of Michigan’s incredible three-year run from 2021-2023. The team went 40-3, won three Big Ten titles, and took home the 2023 national championship.
But the program separated itself from Stalions midway through last season when details of an illegal in-person sign-stealing scheme came to light. Stalions was accused of buying tickets for others to go to games and take cellphone video of the sidelines of future opponents.
Stalions denied wrongdoing during a documentary on Netflix called “Untold: Sign Stealer.”
After parting with Stalions, the Wolverines finished the season 8-0, including a 49-0 win over Michigan State, a win at No. 10 Penn State, a third-straight victory against Ohio State, a third-straight Big Ten championship, a win over Alabama in the Rose Bowl, and a win over 14-0 Washington in the natty.
But this season is not going nearly as well. Michigan lost more than a dozen players to the NFL and most of its coaching staff. After a 4-1 start, the Wolverines have lost four of five games to fall to 5-5.
The biggest problem: Michigan didn’t replace J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. Most of the season has been spent cycling between former walk-on Davis Warren, run-heavy Alex Orji, and seventh-year senior Jack Tuttle.
Sherrone Moore has reportedly made Underwood, the No. 1 player in the 2025 recruiting class, a top priority to address that need during the offseason. Underwood is currently committed to LSU and hasn’t shown much public interest in Michigan.
It‘s ironic that the sign-stealing story — a piece of Michigan football history that will never go away — has now been linked to the Underwood recruitment. But considering all the twists and turns of this story, I guess nothing should surprise us anymore.
