After surviving the upset funhouse that is the Vanderbilt Commodores, the Longhorns (7-1, 3-1 SEC) found out they are No. 5 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings. The top four teams earn a coveted first-round bye.
Texas is ranked No. 2 in the nation in point differential, tallying a plus-26.1 advantage. They have been especially dominant at home, averaging wins by 31.2 points. Texas puts up 37.6 points per game, which is 16th in the nation.
While those numbers are impressive, they haven’t looked like the team that was dominating offensively early in the fall.
Junior quarterback Quinn Ewers has thrown for 1,389 yards and 14 touchdowns while tossing six interceptions. Ewers had two picks in the close call against Vanderbilt and has thrown at least one interception in four straight games.
Junior running back Jaydon Blue has notched 71 carries for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore back Quintrevion Wisner has tallied 77 carries for 409 yards and three touchdowns.
Junior receiver Isaiah Bond has tallied 23 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 16.5 yards per reception.
Texas' offense has been snakebitten with turnovers. They coughed it up at least twice in six of the last seven games. The Longhorns had four turnovers in the loss to Georgia.
Texas started slow out the gate against Oklahoma, Georgia and Vanderbilt. The Longhorns turned the ball over in the first quarter in each game.
The Longhorns' defense is allowing 11.5 points per game, which is the second-best mark in the nation, a statistic not seen in the program since 1983. Texas is No. 1 in yards per play allowed (3.8), total yards allowed per game (241.3) and passing touchdowns allowed per game (three).
The only time they allowed more than 175 yards was to Michigan. They have not allowed any team to rush for more than 150 yards all season.
While the offense has waned, the defense has been a staple of consistency.
The unit is led by sophomore linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who has racked up 28 solo tackles, 5.5. sacks, one forced fumble and one interception. Freshman linebacker Colin Simmons has dazzled with 15 solo tackles, four sacks and one forced fumble.
Senior defensive back Jahdae Barron has been dangerous in the secondary. He has 17 solo tackles with three interceptions and six pass deflections.
The Longhorns have won three matchups against Associated Press Top 25 teams at the time. Two of those teams, Oklahoma and Michigan, are spiraling into the barrel, harming the Texas’ resume.

The Gators (4-4, 2-3) are trying to tread water in the choppy SEC standings. After surviving the meat of the nation’s toughest schedule, head coach Billy Napier received a vote of approval amidst clamoring of an imminent dismissal in Gainesville.
Florida was devastated when starting quarterback DJ Lagway suffered a serious hamstring injury against Georgia last weekend. He is listed as questionable. Lagway had 1,071 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions before going down with the injury.
Veteran quarterback Graham Mertz was lost to an ACL injury earlier in the year. The senior put together 791 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions. He also had 56 rushing yards and a score on the ground.
With the two major pieces sidelined, third-stringer walk-on Aidan Warner will get the start. Warner has played in three games and thrown for 96 yards with one interception.
Senior receiver Elijah Badger was Lagway’s top target. He has amassed 24 receptions for 560 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 23.3 yards per reception.
The Gators offense is putting up 29.5 points per game.
Florida‘s run game is totaling 145.4 yards per rush. It’s led by senior running back Montrell Johnson Jr. He has tallied 70 carries for 373 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson is questionable with a knee injury.
The Gators defense is allowing 381.4 yards per game. They have been sensational in plucking away the ball, tallying three interceptions against Georgia and three more against Kentucky.
They are led by the combo of sophomore linebacker Grayson Howard and senior defensive back Trikweze Bridges, who have combined for 61 tackles, three tackles for loss, one interception and one sack.
Don’t let the .500 record fool you. The Gators took the Tennessee Volunteers to overtime. They also had Georgia on the ropes before running out of gas in the final quarter.
Florida put up 40 or more points against Kentucky and Mississippi State. Both of those games were ripe with careless turnovers from the opposition.
The Gators have lost their last seven games against ranked opponents, including an 0-3 record this season.
It‘s the first meeting between the Gators and the Longhorns since 1940. Texas leads the all-time series 2-0-1
