The recently elected US president will be in office for both the World Cup and the Olympics.
Donald J. Trump will become, as of January 2025, the 47th President of our northern neighbor.
There has been much talk about the problems that a second four-year term, not consecutive, for Trump as the main tenant of the White House would imply for Mexico. However, practically no one has noticed that among the functions of the former Republican Party candidate will be to host, together with his counterparts from Mexico and Canada, the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
If that were not enough, while it will most likely be Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the first female president of Mexico, who will have the honor of announcing the inauguration of this great event on June 11, 2026 with the team coached by Javier ‘Vasco’ Aguirre as host at the renovated Estadio Azteca, it will be Trump who will be in charge of being in the final, on July 19 of the same year, at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and, if the usual protocol is followed, he will be the one to present the captain of the country that wins the coveted FIFA Trophy.
The person who is Prime Minister of Canada at the time will also have the honour. Currently, Justin Trudeau is in power, however, there will be federal elections in the country in 2025 and it will then be known who will occupy the position of honour for 2026.
It should be remembered that the first and only time the United States hosted a World Cup was in 1994 and that on that occasion the Brazilian national team won the final in a penalty shootout against Italy. On that occasion, the President of the United States of America was Bill Clinton. However, the then president did not attend the event held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and left the honor of handing over the FIFA World Cup to his vice president Al Gore, who in turn gave it to the then captain of the Canarinha, Dunga.
If he were to win, Donald Trump, as President of the United States, would also be responsible for opening and closing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, which will be held from July 14 to 30 of that year and he would still be the top leader prior to the elections that would take place in November at that time.
