The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) celebrated its 90th anniversary on Tuesday evening with an event in Limassol, in the presence of Uefa president Aleksander Čeferin and with a message from Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
Čeferin said that although Cyprus was small and thus did not have access to the resources of larger countries, it nevertheless had good teams.
Slovenian Čeferin recalled that the Cyprus national team had beaten his country in a match and jokingly requested that it not happen again.
The event was attended by the House president, the chief of police, ministers and representatives from organisations and associations from Cyprus and abroad.
CFA president Giorgos Koumas said the event was to honour Cyprus’ football and all those involved, whether in the limelight or behind the scenes.
He added that CFA was doing everything possible to upgrade the island’s football and called on the Turkish Cypriots to work together with the Greek Cypriots to implement an agreement signed 11 years ago for a temporary arrangement until the Cyprus problem is solved and football is also unified.
In a recorded message, Fifa’s president congratulated CFA and pointed out its many achievements over the years.
On behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis expressed the government’s wishes for an auspicious future, full of awards and prizes.
Hartsiotis said his ministry was working towards a safe, hospitable and pleasant environment at sports events and was determined to quash violence.
The event included presentations, awards and an exhibition of historical relics.
