The Texas Tech football team struggled for much of Saturday’s game but had the perfect drive to score the go-ahead touchdown with 20 seconds left, lifting the Red Raiders to a 23-22 win over 10th-ranked Iowa State.
The Red Raiders (6-3, 4-2) trailed 22-17 with 2:11 left in the game when Behren Morton (237 yards, 2 TDs) and Tahj Brooks (122 yards, TD) orchestrated the game-winning drive, Brooks scoring from five yards out.
The Cyclones suffered their first loss of the season.
Josh Kelly had eight catches for 127 yards and caught both of Morton’s TD throws in the win.
6:07 p.m.: Tahj Brooks takes the direct snap and runs in for the touchdown. Two-point attempt fails. Red Raiders take a 23-22 lead with 19 seconds left.
6:05 p.m.: False start pushes Texas Tech back to the 6. Still 34 seconds left.
6:04 p.m.: Red Raiders have 1st-and-goal at the ISU 1 with 34 seconds left down 22-17.
5:52 p.m.: Tahj Brooks goes 16 yards to get us to the two-minute timeout. Red Raiders need to go 60 yards in 1:59 for this one.
5:48 p.m.: On 3rd-and-13 from the Tech 44, Becht connects with Carson Brown who takes it about 30 yards on the run for the TD. Cyclones lead 22-17 with 2:11 left after the failed two-point attempt.
5:44 p.m.: Red Raiders again can’t cash in, going 3-and-out. Cyclones have 4:31 left and start the drive at their 35.
5:39 p.m.: Texas Tech’s defense is playing its best possible game. It holds Iowa State to a 50-yard field goal attempt and Konrardy’s kick goes way, way, way right. Red Raiders up 17-16, 5:17 left.
5:30 p.m.: Texas Tech was about to go for it on 4th-and-1 but called for delay of game. Red Raiders go for it and the pass is incomplete. Morton missed a wide-open Kelly as he was scrambling.
5:24 p.m.: C.J. Baskerville almost gets the interception on 3rd and Iowa State settles for a field goal. Red Raiders lead 17-16 with 12:23 left.
5:21 p.m.: Texas Tech calls its first timeout with 12:30 left and Iowa State facing 3rd-and-goal from the 3.
5:10 p.m.: To the fourth, Texas Tech leads 17-13. Iowa State has 1st-and-15.
5:02 p.m.: The offense is alive. Coy Eakin comes up with a wild 25-yard catch while on the ground and Morton hits Josh Kelly for a 19-yard TD. Texas Tech retakes the lead 17-13 with 1:56 left in the 3rd.
4:43 p.m.: Over in the soccer world, Texas Tech knocked off Baylor 2-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament on Wednesday.
4:41 p.m.: Jacob Rodriguez continues to make plays, forcing a fumble that’s recovered by Chapman Lewis. Red Raiders ball at their own 14.
4:31 p.m.: The second half has begun.
4:10 p.m.: We’ve reached halftime. Iowa State leads 13-10 and will get the ball to start the third.
4:08 p.m.: Rocco Becht fires one into the end zone over Bralyn Lux to hit Jayden Higgins for a 20-yard TD with four seconds left. Cyclones lead 13-10.
4:05 p.m.: Morton throws his second interception of the half trying to force another throw to Josh Kelly.
3:58 p.m.: Iowa State goes 3-and-out and Tech will get another shot before halftime.
3:52 p.m.: Morton takes a shot down field to a heavily-covered Caleb Douglas and the pass is intercepted.
3:51 p.m.: In other news, the Texas Tech soccer team is up 2-1 at halftime over Baylor in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City.
3:50 p.m.: Texas Tech defense has shown up thus far, forces another 3-and-out and a punt. Tech ball with 2:34 left in half.
3:47 p.m.: The Red Raiders do nothing with it. Morton throws two incompletions and is sacked for a third time today. Iowa State ball at its own 15.
3:45 p.m.: Pressure from Ben Roberts causes a Rocco Becht interception by A.J. McCarty. Red Raiders take over in ISU territory.
3:37 p.m.: Red Raiders go 3-and-out and punt it away. Cyclones ball at their own 15 with 7:30 left.
3:31 p.m.: Texas Tech’s defense holds again and Iowa State gets a 37-yard field goal. Red Raiders lead 10-6 with 9:25 left in 2nd.
3:29 p.m.: Tech plays having trouble with the grass at Jack Trice Stadium. Maurion Horn slipped in pursuit and it led to a 28-yard gain on 3rd-and-7.
3:23 p.m.: Tech goes backward with two sacks for a total of 15 yards and a false start. Red Raiders punt it away. Back-to-back drives without a touch for Tahj Brooks. Iowa State ball at its own 44.
3:20 p.m.: Iowa State gets 15 on 3rd down, goes for it but the 4th down pass is incomplete. Tech takes over at its own 24.
3:15 p.m.: End of 1, Texas Tech leads 10-3. Iowa State facing a 3rd-and-17 from the Tech 39.
3:05 p.m.: Tech has to settle for the FG after the PI call and Gino Garcia connects from 44 yards out. 10-7 Red Raiders, 3:51 left in first.
3:03 p.m.: Coy Eakin catches a touchdown but he’s called for offensive pass interference.
3:00 p.m.: Texas Tech continuing to use Josh Kelly has a vertical threat rather than horizontal and it pays off with a 17-yard gain followed by another 12 yards. Kelly already at 64 yards.
2:55 p.m.: Texas Tech holds but Kyle Konrardy connects on a 49-yard field goal. Red Raiders lead 7-3 with 8:33 left in first.
2:44 p.m.: Josh Kelly is all alone after an Iowa State defender slips and he’s in for a 35-yard TD catch from Morton. Red Raiders strike early, up 7-0 w/ 12:16 left in 1st quarter.
2:44 p.m.: Tahj Brooks has eclipsed the 4,000-yard career rushing yard total on this opening drive.
2:40 p.m.: Texas Tech will receive the opening kickoff.
2:39 p.m.: ESPN reporting that Behren Morton missed the second half of last week’s TCU game because x-rays taken at halftime “falsely” showed a broken collarbone. Morton is good to go today.
2:37 p.m.: Ole Miss has finally finished smacking Arkansas and Texas Tech-Iowa State is live on ESPN.
