The Crushers picked up their biggest win of the season in a road upset of the Mustangs in REC-Adobe play Friday night.
San Marin (6-3, 1-3) entered the game ranked as the No. 8 team in the North Coast Section and won CIF state titles in 2021 and 2022.
In wet and rainy conditions, Vintage (6-3, 2-2) returned to its roots of ball control and defense. The Crushers held a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on touchdown runs from Bo Lode and Mason Howell and took a two-score lead into halftime after intercepting San Marin quarterback Daniel Rolovich deep in their own territory just before the break.
They then opened the third quarter with a methodical, run-heavy drive that ate up more than nine minutes and ended in a field goal to make it a three-score game at 17-0. The Crushers then intercepted Rolovich again at the end of thr third quarter. Lode and Travis Larsen had the interceptions for Vintage.
San Marin scored its lone touchdown of the game with 2:39 left.
“Defense was nice all night, we created some pressure, got (Rolovich) off his mark and made him scramble a little bit, and although he’s a good scrambler we kind of had an answer for that as well,” Vintage head coach Dylan Leach said. “… Offensively, we went back to old Vintage, threw maybe three times and got back to ball control. We felt that if we could grind out first downs and keep their offense off the field that we’d have a much better shot.”
Vintage will close out the regular season next week as host to Cardinal Newman.
In a battle of Redwood Empire Conference Bay division powers, Ukiah emerged with a statement win Friday on a muddy home field.
The Wildcats topped Maria Carrillo at home to improve to 6-3 on the year and 3-1 in league play.
Omaurie Phillips-Porter had three touchdowns on the night for Ukiah – two on special teams – and another on a long reception from quarterback Beau David, who also ran for two scores. Phillips-Porter had an 81-yard kickoff return touchdown in the first half and then returned a punt 85 yards for a score in the second half.
Maria Carrillo (7-2, 3-1 REC-Bay) led 8-0 early, but Ukiah rallied back to take a 21-14 lead at halftime before pulling away in the second half.
“It was a good character game,” Ukiah head coach Paul Cronin said. “Muddy field, there was a lot of focus stuff that’s gotta happen because it’s easy to slip and all those things, but our guys did a good job focusing, so really proud of them for that.”
Logan Bruce scored two rushing touchdowns for the Pumas — the first from two yards out and the second from six.
Maria Carrillo will look to turn the page quickly as it closes out the regular season next week with a home tilt against first-place St. Vincent.
Pumas head coach Jay Higgins praised the play of his defense — especially its ability to create havoc moments in the Ukiah backfield.
“The difference was the explosive plays. They hit (Phillips-Porter) for a touchdown on a long post route, and they got big, explosive plays on special teams to put them in a comfortable lead,” Higgins said of Ukiah. “Other than those plays, it was just a slog where we were all trying to fight for a few yards. … I think, different situation — if we could have eliminated some of the chaos — it could have been a different game. But that’s what happens.”
Friday’s loss snapped a five-game Maria Carrillo winning streak that spanned all the way back to Sept. 14.
“We’ve approached every week so far with the mindset that we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves; we want to take care of today,” Higgins said. “That’s every day of the week in practice. Of course we want to take care of Friday night, but you can’t win two games in one night. You’ve got to focus on the task at hand.
“We have been very good at staying in the present and not looking ahead, focusing on the now. … I think the key is for us to recognize that we’ve got to own everything that we do. Our previous record doesn’t mean anything. All that matters is how we respond next week.”
Ukiah will close out the regular season at Analy (3-6, 2-2) next week.
For the second week in a row, Analy rode a dominant offensive line and a well-rounded defensive performance to get in the win column.
The Tigers went on the road to beat Santa Rosa to improve to 3-6 on the year and 2-2 in REC-Bay play.
“It’s good to feel like we’re kind of getting something going here late in the season,” Analy coach Dan Bourdon said. “I think this puts us in a position to play a meaningful game next week. I feel like if we win, we’re gonna have a shot to at least qualify for the playoffs. So, it’s good to feel like we’re still playing for something.”
Sloppy weather conditions made it difficult for either team to move the ball through the air. But that wasn’t a problem for Analy, as it found plenty of success running the ball.
“It was really the same story as (last week’s win over Montgomery) — our offensive line played great,” Bourdon said. “Stayed on the ground and we were able to move it well. Had a couple of big kick returns, too.”
Santa Rosa scored early in the second half to make it a one-score game. But the Tigers responded immediately and received a huge spark when Oliver Sherwin returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.
Analy’s Matthew Medina and Victor Villarreal ran for two touchdowns apiece and Brantz Jacobs ran for one.
Analy will look to produce a big upset in its regular-season finale when it hosts Ukiah next Friday.
For Santa Rosa, Miguel Gallardo ran for a 110 yards on nine carries and had a 67-yard touchdown. Rashai Thompson ran for two touchdowns and 116 yards on 15, including an explosive 70-yard explosive run and Daniel Mills had 58 rushing yards on 11 carries.
The Panthers will close out the regular season next week with a road game at Montgomery.
