For the fifth time in six years, the Noblesville girls soccer team is going for it all.
The Class 3A No. 2 Millers will attempt to win another state championship on Saturday at IU Indianapolis’ Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Noblesville, the two-time defending 3A state champion, takes on No. 14-ranked Center Grove in the finals, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Trojans are making their second appearance in an IHSAA state title game. Their first was back in 1997, the third year of the IHSAA tournament, where Center Grove lost to Carmel 3-0. The Trojans also qualified for state in 2007, falling to eventual state champion Cathedral 1-0 in the semifinals of what was then a one-class tournament.
Center Grove’s coach is Myron Vaughn, a familiar to soccer fans in Hamilton County. Vaughn was a longtime coach of the Westfield boys team, leading the Shamrocks to three sectional titles, including two in his first two years as the coach (2007 and 2008). Vaughn also coached Westfield to a sectional championship in 2014. Vaughn is in his third year as the Trojans’ coach, and they won a sectional in his first year, 2022.
The 2024 Center Grove girls team is 16-4-3 entering the state final game. The Trojans started their post-season run by winning the Columbus East sectional: Center Grove beat Greenwood 3-0 in the first round, No. 19 Columbus North 3-0 in the semifinals and Franklin Community 5-1 in the championship.
That sent the Trojans to the regional, where they beat Terre Haute South 3-0 in the semifinal, then defeated No. 7 Castle 1-0 in the championship. Center Grove played No. 12 East Central at the Martinsville semi-state and won 2-1 for a ticket to the state championship.
Sophomore forward Mia Marlin is the Trojans’ scoring leader with 14 goals. Sophomore defender Sadie McLaughlin has the most assists with seven, followed by Marlin with six. Sophomore goalkeeper Anderson Broshears has made 81 saves and has a 0.709 goals against average with 12 shutouts.
Noblesville is 18-0-2 for the season, the 22nd under coach Mike Brady. The Millers triumphed at their home field, Hallmark Orthodontics Soccer Complex for their sixth consecutive sectional title. Noblesville beat Anderson 10-0 in the first round, No. 16 Mount Vernon 5-1 in the semifinals and No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern 1-0 in the championship.
The Millers took care of business at the Kokomo regional, beating Harrison 5-0 in a semifinal played at their homefield, then defeating No. 8 Homestead 4-0 in the championship. Noblesville went back to Kokomo for the semi-state, where the Millers beat No. 13 Penn 4-0.
Senior forward Meredith Tippner has been her dominant self during the season, with 24 goals and 13 assists. Sophomore forward Delaney Stone is also a solid scorer, with 13 goals and nine assists. Senior Bella Wyatt has been strong in the net, with 70 saves and a 0.217 GAA, including 12 shutouts.
