SHANGHAI, China (AP) — FIFA finally announced a first sponsor for its revamped Club World Cup on Wednesday in a deal that will brand video review checks at the tournament in the United States next year.

Just when it appeared Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees were right back in this World Series, they all but handed away the trophy. An epic meltdown of defensive miscues, beginning with Judge’s embarrassing error in center field, helped the Los Angeles Dodgers rally in a five-run fifth inning that tied the score at 5. Young shortstop Anthony Volpe and ace pitcher Gerrit Cole also committed costly mistakes. New York’s bullpen squandered a one-run lead in the eighth, and the Dodgers held on for a 7-6 victory in Game 5 that wrapped up their eighth championship and second in five years. Finally back in their first World Series since 2009, the Yankees didn’t last long.
The Los Angeles Dodgers won their second World Series championship in five seasons, overcoming a five-run deficit with the help of three Yankees defensive miscues and rallying on sacrifice flies from Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts in the eighth inning to beat New York 7-6 in Game 5. Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Alex Verdugo’s RBI single chased Jack Flaherty in the second and Giancarlo Stanton’s third-inning homer against Ryan Brasier built a 5-0 lead for New York. But the Dodgers rallied, helped by a shaky defensive performance by the Yankees.
Karl-Anthony Towns had 44 points and 13 rebounds, Jalen Brunson scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and the New York Knicks rallied to beat the Miami Heat 116-107 on Wednesday night. Towns had the fourth-most points for the Knicks against the Heat. Jamal Crawford scored 52 in 2007, Carmelo Anthony had 50 at Miami in 2013 and RJ Barrett 46 in 2022. Mikal Bridges added 17 points for New York, which trailed by 13 in the third quarter before flipping the game. OG Anunoby had 11 points and Josh Hart finished with 10 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Tyler Herro had 34 points for Miami, hitting eight 3-pointers.
The Mexican Tennis Federation has cancelled a junior tournament in the central state of Guanajuato after 10 players, all underage, and a coach, were victims of a “virtual” kidnapping. The Juniors 30 tournament, the lowest-ranked tournament under the International Tennis Federation’s umbrella, was being held in the city of Irapuato. The players and their coach are from the central state of Queretaro, and all are back at their homes, the Mexican federation said. Virtual kidnapping is an extortion scheme that tricks the victims into paying a ransom to free a family member whom they believe is threatened with violence or death. Unlike traditional abductions, virtual kidnappers do not abduct anyone.
CLEVELAND — LeBron James, like he has countless times in this arena on this floor, planted his foot on the court and exploded for a one-handed slam — his signature play in the city where he once brought a championship.
Evan Mobley scored 25 points, Donovan Mitchell added 24 and the Cleveland Cavaliers improved to 5-0 with a 134-110 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in a game that included a special homecoming for LeBron James and his son, Bronny. The win marks the first time the Cavs have started 5-0 since the 2016-17 season, led by LeBron, and the third time in franchise history. Bronny played for the second time as a pro and was inserted with 5:16 left. The younger James made a 14-foot jumper with 2:03 to play. Jarrett Allen added 20 points and 17 rebounds for Cleveland.
DALLAS — Straight up: Considering the delightful uncertainty of college football these days, what with the likes of Vanderbilt kicking sand in the faces of any and all bullies, the need for inclusivity practically demands the new 12-team playoff. The architects did a bang-up job, too. First-…
The Southeastern Conference says its 2023 revision of policies regarding fans rushing onto the field after games has made those moments safer, even if stiffer fines haven’t eliminated such trespasses. There have been four this season — one at LSU against Mississippi, one at Arkansas against Tennessee, one at Vanderbilt against Alabama and one at Tennessee against Alabama. If fans at Death Valley rush the field after 16th-ranked LSU plays No. 14 Alabama on Nov. 9, the Tigers’ athletic program would have to pay up to half a million dollars to the Crimson Tide. The fines cover football and basketball. They start at $100,000 and max out at $500,000 for third or subsequent offenses.
Aaron Judge has busted out of a postseason slump with his first World Series home run, connecting for a two-run shot in the first inning that put the New York Yankees ahead in Game 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The star slugger was batting just .152 in October and .133 during his first Fall Classic before sending a 403-foot shot to right-center on the first pitch he saw from Jack Flaherty. It was the 16th postseason homer and third this year for Judge, expected to win his second AL MVP award in three years next month. He hadn’t gone deep in 29 plate appearances since a tying drive at Cleveland late in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Oct. 17.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — RJ Davis put aside pro basketball for another year to return to North Carolina, and knows what he wants out of his final college season.
Florida will be without receiver Eugene Wilson III and cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. against No. 2 Georgia on Saturday. The Gators ruled both starters out. Wilson ranks third on the team with 19 receptions for 266 yards and a touchdown. Marshall has been one of Florida’s top defensive backs, notching 20 tackles and a team-leading four pass breakups. The Gators also ruled out cornerback Ja’Keem Jackson and safety Asa Turner. Running back Montrell Johnson Jr., linebacker R.J. Moten and guard Damieon George Jr. are listed as questionable.
Less than two weeks before the regular season began, the Los Angeles Rams abruptly traded linebacker Ernest Jones to Tennessee for a minor late-round draft pick upgrade in 2026. Coach Sean McVay curiously called the trade a “football decision” when it happened. Two months later, McVay says the Rams made what they thought was the best decision in the moment after failing to agree to a contract extension with the fourth-year linebacker. Jones meets up with the Rams (3-4) this weekend in Seattle, where he has landed after another trade. The struggling Titans got a much better return for Jones than Los Angeles did.
CHICAGO — When Matt Eberflus held his weekly meeting with the Chicago Bears’ leadership council Wednesday, the coach and players had a lot to address as they picked up the pieces from the 18-15, last-second loss to the Washington Commanders.

LOS ANGELES — The 15-year-old Santa Margarita Catholic High School student wasn’t sure what to expect when he heard loud cheering and banging sounds coming from the locker room that houses the varsity football team.
The Minnesota Vikings experienced a significant setback when left tackle Christian Darrisaw tore ligaments in his left knee that removed one of their most irreplaceable players from the lineup for the remainder of the season. That sure didn’t stop them from trying to find a sub. The Vikings acquired veteran Cam Robinson in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for a future third-day draft pick. They were working quickly to get him up to speed in time to play this week against the Indianapolis Colts.
SAN FRANCISCO — Lindy Waters III has been one of the Warriors’ best players since the first day of training camp, according to Steve Kerr.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley and team owner Jeffrey Lurie hit the links this week at Merion Golf Club with quite a final member of their foursome, former President Barack Obama. Hurts was not permitted to actually play golf, per terms of his $255 million contract. Hurts still enjoyed the spoils that came with walking the course with the former president. Barkley said he took the rare opportunity to play golf with a president to ask Obama about leadership.
MIAMI — When Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates arrive at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday for Game 2 in their first-round MLS playoff series, they should be prepared to find a fired-up crowd of 70,000 fans and a fearless, upset-minded opponent.
NEW YORK — Jayden Daniels’ game-winning Hail Mary to Washington Commanders receiver Noah Brown last Sunday was the highlight of the NFL season for the NFC East’s first-place darling.
The World Series had its most-watched game in five years Tuesday night as the New York Yankees avoided a sweep. The Yankees’ 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 averaged 16.28 million viewers on Fox, Fox Deportes and streaming, according to Nielsen. That is the most-watched game in the Fall Classic since Game 7 in 2019 when the Washington Nationals’ victory over the Houston Astros averaged 23.22 million. It is the highest-viewed Game 4 since the 2016 series between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians.
Buffalo Bill edge rusher Von Miller returned to practice with little say about serving a four-game NFL suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The 35-year-old said all of that was behind him. He instead placed his focus forward in looking ahead to joining a division-leading team and carrying over his production from the first four weeks of the season. Miller’s suspension was connected to being accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend 11 months ago. The NFL’s active-leading pass rusher rejoins the Bills who prepare to host their division-rival Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
Jessica Campbell of the Seattle Kraken has settled in as the first woman to hold an on-the-bench role as an assistant or associate coach in NHL history. She just marked her first games behind the bench in her native Canada. She feels comfortable at the highest level of hockey and says she feels she is part of something bigger as women carve out their role in the NHL.
Lamar Jackson missed practice for the Baltimore Ravens. Coach John Harbaugh says the star quarterback had a rest day. But the Ravens did list him on their injury report with back and knee issues. Jackson played until the end of Baltimore’s loss to Cleveland on Sunday, and there wasn’t any sign of a significant problem. The Ravens host Denver this weekend. Jackson has a passer rating of 115.4 and has thrown for 2,099 yards and 17 touchdowns with only two interceptions. He also has 501 yards rushing.
Brazil winger Savinho was carried off on a stretcher during Manchester City’s match at Tottenham in the English League Cup. City also lost center back Manuel Akanji to an undisclosed injury in the warmup. Savinho was tears and was consoled by teammates as he was being carried off the field in the 63rd minute after hurting his right ankle. City is already without fellow wingers Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku because of injuries. Tottenham also picked up two injuries — to Micky van de Ven and Timo Werner. Spurs won 2-1.
Quarterback Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears’ offense need to focus on scoring earlier in games before facing the Arizona Cardinals, but before they do that, they had to address the hangover from their loss to Washington on a Hail Mary pass. There are lingering accountability issues for some players as they try to move past the loss on the final play, and coach Matt Eberflus has taken criticism from the public as well as from players. The Bears won’t say whether there is any discipline for Tyrique Stevenson, who made the key mistake on the Hail Mary pass.

Manchester United responded to the departure of Erik ten Hag by scoring four goals in the first 38 minutes on the way to a 5-2 thrashing of Leicester in the last 16 of the English League Cup. Tottenham eliminated Manchester City with a 2-1 win and also advancing to the quarterfinals were defending champion Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle and Crystal Palace. Two days after firing Ten Hag, United displayed the cutting edge so often lacking under the Dutchman with Brazil midfielder Casemiro scoring two of the team’s first-half goals. One was a curling strike into the top corner from 30 meters. Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes also netted in that early flurry of goals, while Fernandes added a fifth in the 59th.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kings star DeMar DeRozan is living up to the hype after coming to Sacramento over the summer in a surprise sign-and-trade deal.
Baseball’s GM meetings start next Tuesday.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love didn’t practice Wednesday, but remained hopeful about the possibility of playing Sunday after a strained groin prevented him from finishing a 30-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Love said “I think it’s realistic” regarding the chances he could play Sunday. Love initially got hurt on the first series of the game. He said it happened while rolling out to his right on a third down play. Love remained in the game until he dropped to the ground near the sideline after completing a second down pass to Josh Jacobs early in the third quarter.
Cam Skattebo chooses to dish out pain instead of receiving it. He’s been one of the nation’s toughest players to tackle during his two seasons at Arizona State and makes defenders pay for trying to take him down. The senior has rushed for 848 yards with 10 touchdowns this season and is seventh in the FBS for yards after contact rushing and receiving. Skattebo also is one of the country’s most versatile players. He has played quarterback, tight end, receiver and on special teams in the past.
Nike executive John Slusher is moving into the Olympic world to head the commercial arm for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Slusher was named CEO of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Properties, a joint venture between the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the organizers of the LA Games that oversees sponsorships, ticket sales and hospitality. Olympic planners have set a goal of reaching $2.5 billion in sponsorships, and LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said this summer the organization had reached about 65% of its goal.
A Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty in a sports betting scheme that ended Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter’s NBA career. Mahmud Mollah pleaded guilty Wednesday to wire fraud conspiracy. So far, three people — including Porter — have publicly admitted their roles in the scandal. Two other men also have been charged. The player withdrew early from games so that tipped-off gamblers could win wagers that he would score fewer points than sportsbooks expected. Mollah’s lawyer declined to comment Wednesday. According to a court complaint, Mollah used his knowledge of Porter’s plans to place bets that would have netted over $1 million to be split among the conspirators. But a betting company blocked Mollah from collecting most of the money.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A year after teammate George Kittle was fined by the NFL for a profane personal message in the form of a T-shirt displayed during a win over the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa could face league discipline over expressing his political views.
MINNEAPOLIS — The Timberwolves are in their 36th season and don’t have what could be classified as a rival. A big reason for that is a history that involves many more poor seasons than good ones. The basic number is that they have reached the playoffs 12 times in their 35 previous seasons.
