Syracuse, N.Y. — Fran Brown doesn’t want local recruits to get out of his backyard, Justin Barron describes how close he was to going in the transfer portal, starters will play on special teams and the different feel in the building.
Those are some of the best things I heard at Syracuse football spring practice on Tuesday.
On his approach to the transfer portal window open now until April 30:
“We’re going to do whatever it takes to help us win game one. Not disrespecting them (Ohio). I must want to do whatever is going to help us compete this summer. Help us maximize each player. We have to go assess each position and make sure it is up to par to compete in this conference.”
On the upcoming spring game:
“You gotta make sure you’re there. If you’re from Syracuse, you should be at the game. You’re going to see action. You’re going to see contact. That’s what football is made from, guys being tough. Trying to establish running the ball and put guys in one-on-one situations so you can see all of our guys’ skillset. By the end of the first half, you should be able to tell us what we need to fix.”
On his approach to local recruiting:
“This is my backyard. If there are football players in my backyard, then I’m going to watch them play. If they are going to go to college, then why wouldn’t you play at the crib? Someone just ran a 10.6 the other day that is in our backyard. Why would I let him leave the yard? Wasn’t Mike Hart from here? None of that (expletive) ain’t going to happen no more, excuse my language.”
On the difference between SU’s first and second scrimmage:
“The intensity. For guys knowing the defense and knowing the offense, everyone as whole being able to have the knowledge of what we are doing instead of just running around, it helps pick up the intensity.”
On how SU’s new 4-2-5 defensive approach will allow him to thrive:
“It allows me to do what I do best. For me, that’s being in space. Being able to play on the perimeter to make plays. There’s not a lot of guys who can match up with me out there with my size and speed. It gives me an advantage to be able to play in space.”
On how close he was to jumping into the transfer portal:
“I was about as close as you can be to going in the portal. I had my papers signed, just not turned in, before I talked to Coach Fran.”
On how some of SU’s starters will be playing on special teams:
“The teams that put starters on special teams are helping their teams and that individual. How many first-round draft picks are there? if you’re not a first-round draft pick you are playing on special teams in the NFL. If you don’t learn those techniques and have those opportunities in college, when you get to the next level, you’re a step behind everybody.”
On the difference in the building under new coach Fran Brown:
“It’s definitely night and day from before. Everybody is coming into the building a lot earlier and a lot more prepared for the day. I feel like there’s guys that just care a lot more. You got guys on the team that, during meetings for instance, are all attentive and paying attention. I feel like it didn’t used to be like that. There’s a different feeling in the building.”
