Toronto city staff are recommending a plan to “hit up out-of-town visitors for the cash it needs” to make up its World Cup funding shortfall with a “temporary hike” to the municipal accommodation tax charged to hotels and short-term rentals in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup, according to Ben Spurr of the TORONTO STAR. The 14-month increase in the levy from 6-8.5% would start next June and is “expected to generate almost” $57M in additional revenue for the city. However, even with the funding injection, Toronto “would still be almost” $40M short of what it needs to host the tournament, after the federal and provincial governments “left it on the hook for nearly half the event’s costs.” It is “expected to cost Toronto” $380M to be one of the 16 host cities. The province has pledged “up to” $97M towards the cost, while the federal government is “contributing more than” $104M, leaving Toronto responsible for the remaining $178M, “or just under half the total.” Vancouver, the only other Canadian host city, is “also increasing its hotel tax to pay for the World Cup,” but in its case the higher rate “will be in place for seven years” (TORONTO STAR, 10/29).
