The young midfielder scored the goal to knot the match with Japan at 2-2 in regulation before slotting home the winning penalty kick.
The Liverpool FC Women have had a bit of a midfield crisis on their hand, with the club being quite shorthanded due to injuries and absences for international competitions. One of those players missing has been Zara Shaw. The young midfield phenom has been away competing for England at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, along with Liverpool youth team goalkeeper Eva Spencer.
England performed well in the group stages, and progressed to take on Japan in the quarterfinals. Shaw proved to be the pivotal player of the match. With her side trailing 2-1 in the 72nd minute, Shaw headed home a corner kick to knot the score. The two squads took it to penalty kicks, and it was again Shaw serving as the hero, knocking in the match-clinching spot kick. England will take on Spain in the semifinals on Thursday.

When Shaw returns to Liverpool after the U17 World Cup, she will likely be called upon for senior team minutes. With Sofie Lundgaard out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, only Ceri Holland, Fuka Nagano, and Marie Höbinger are the other midfielders on the roster. It will be a big opportunity for Shaw who was expected to start her transition to the senior team last season, but ended up missing the year through her own ACL injury suffered in a preseason friendly.
