The Washington Demons suffered a pair of soccer losses against conference rival Fort Madison yesterday, but the boys very nearly pulled off a huge second-half comeback. Washington seized the initial lead at home when Bill De La Rosa scored in the seventh minute off a throw-in from fellow senior Lane Schrock.
But Fort Madison had the tying goal one minute later and would strike again in the 16th and 18th minutes to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. As they have done multiple times this season against Southeast Conference opponents, the Demons would come back from a multi-goal deficit.
De La Rosa would corral a deflected goal kick and put it in the back of the net four minutes into the second half, and senior Brayan Arreola would knock in the equalizer in the 65th minute by having a left-footed shot bounce off the right goal post and ricochet into the left side. The match would remain tied at three through the end of regulation and two overtime periods, meaning penalty kicks decided a winner.
Despite Arreola, senior Isaac Gentry and sophomore Edwin Cortes all making their attempts, a miss on their first meant that Washington could not keep pace with Fort Madison, as the Bloodhounds went five-for-five on penalties to earn the victory. After entering the game 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, Washington’s undefeated start comes to an end.
The Demon girls trailed by only a goal at the half but could not score on Fort Madison, going on to a 3-0 defeat. Washington drops to 1-3 in the Southeast Conference and 2-5 overall. Both Demon teams will be back in action Thursday against Keokuk, but the girls are also scheduled to return to the pitch later today against Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union.
