Less than two years remain until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the preparations already look to be in full swing. As teams around the globe work hard to secure a spot in the prestigious 48-team tournament, significant developments are emerging in the host nation. Apparently, Mauricio Pochettino and the USMNT are set to make travel arrangements easier for their fellow rivals.
That’s according to a report compiled by CW39, which states that Chicago, Illinois-based United Airlines has unveiled a special flying service between Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico (PXM). A statement from Phil Griffith, Vice President of Airport Operations, at United Airlines, Houston hub said that the latest service “not only enriches our network but also strengthens Houston’s role as a vital link between the U.S. and Mexico.”
Further expressing his pride over the newly launched route that makes connectivity between Mexico and the US much better, Griffith added, “This service reflects our commitment to providing diverse travel options for our customers and supporting the growing demand for leisure and business travel to this vibrant destination.”

The renowned American airline company claims that United customers will be able to take full advantage of the nonstop service to Puerto Escondido. It will be operated once a week throughout the year by United Express partner Mesa Airlines using Embraer 175 aircraft, further solidifying Houston’s role as a key gateway to Latin America. Furthermore, the airline intends to launch the service in April 2025, just one year ahead of Houston’s hosting duties for the 2026 World Cup.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire also expressed his happiness over this latest announcement stating, “Adding Puerto Escondido to our growing list of international destinations is another win for Houston before the 2026 World Cup.”

That’s not all; Mr. Mayor emphasized that the city is focused on improving the passenger experience by introducing new flights, upgrading airport infrastructure, and enhancing parking facilities, all aimed at boosting business and tourism opportunities.
“As a primary gateway to Latin America, Houston must continue expanding access, which will drive economic growth,” Whitmire concluded. Be that as it may, it is indeed a significant development for America, who are certainly working hard to make the 2026 World Cup the best experience possible for all the fans, players, and teams.
