COLUMBUS — Nine games into the 2024 season and Aquinas Catholic junior Izzie Kadavy has played a significant role for the Scotus Central Catholic girls soccer team.
The Shamrocks are 6-3 and earned an 8-0 win over Kearney Catholic on Friday at home.
“The win means a lot, it gives us a lot of confidence,” Kadavy said. “It’s really helping us with our confidence on our passes and our runs with the ball and each game it’s showing more and more.”
Scotus started strong in the win recording goals in the fifth and seventh minute to quickly lead 2-0. Kadavy was able to record one of the early goals and also had a first-half assist in the 22nd minute.
The Shamrocks would finish the first half with a 5-0 lead and would later add three goals in the second half including a second goal from Kadavy on a penalty kick in the 58th minute.
Kadavy would finish the game with two goals and one assist.
“I think I did good, I was making a lot of runs to get to the line,” Kadavy said. “They gave some good passes and I’m glad I helped them score too.”
Overall, Kadavy ranks tied for third on the team with seven goals and is second on the team with five assists.
“It means a lot to be helping, I think I can continue by just being there for the ball,” Kadavy said.
Following the win, the Shamrocks entered play on Monday (after print deadline) at Millard North with a 6-3 record. Scotus will return to the pitch on Thursday against visiting Schuyler.
“I think this win can be positive by giving us the confidence to keep going,” Kadavy said. “We know that we can win games against harder teams.”
Aquinas Catholic sophomore Gus Yindrick dribbles the ball in Friday’s Scotus Central Catholic boys soccer game against Kearney Catholic at Wilderness Park in Columbus.
Aquinas sophomore Gus Yindrick has also been suiting up for the Shamrocks this soccer season and continues to improve during his first season with Scotus.
“I think I’ve gotten better defending and knowing position-wise where I need to be when I don’t have the ball,” Yindrick said.
The Shamrocks snapped a four-game shootout win streak with a 3-2 nail-biting win in overtime over Kearney Catholic.
Scotus scored in the second and 24th minute to led 2-0 at the half. The Stars would score in the 77th and 80th minute to force another 20 minutes of play as the Shamrocks competed in a fifth straight overtime match.
The Shamrocks would avoid a fifth shootout in a row thanks to a game-winning goal in the 99th minute.
“I think we really started out really strong, we played really well that whole first half,” Yindrick said. “We got too comfortable a gave up a couple of goals but we got it done in overtime.”
Yindrick was able to draw some kicks for the Shamrocks in the 3-2 win over the Stars.
“I think I did pretty well, it was one of my better games and I think I’ve improved a lot on dribbling and one-on-one skills,” Yindrick said. “I think I could use that against the Kearney Catholic defenders and I think that worked out pretty well.”
The OT win over Kearney Catholic improved Scotus to 6-3 overall, the Shamrocks were also in action Tuesday against Madison and will also host Schuyler on Thursday.
“I think we’re playing well,” Yindrick said. “If we can keep that energy from the first half and carry that over then I think we could do some damage to teams.”
