MIAMI – The Dominican Republic set a new attendance record in its group stage exit while the United States advanced to the quarterfinals as the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup continued on Tuesday in the Dominican Republic.
The match between the Dominican Republic and Nigeria saw a record crowd of 13,535 fans at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo. The attendance set a new milestone as the highest attended football match for any Dominican Republic national team.
The United States had a celebratory day as well with a victory over Korea Republic. The USA advances to the knockout stage and is the lone Concacaf nation alive in the title hunt.
United States qualifies for the quarterfinals
The United States won 5-nil against Korea Republic in Group B at CFC Stadium in Santiago De Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.
Melanie Barcenas struck the back of the net 29 seconds into the game, scoring the fastest goal in USYNT history, after stealing the ball in the midfield and shooting a right-foot banger from outside the box.
Kennedy Fuller doubled the lead for the Americans in the 10’, with Barcenas providing the assist. The goal marks the second in the tournament for Fuller.
Barcenas struck again in the 47’ to put the finishing touch on a recovered ball from Kimmi Ascanio.
Mary Long added a fourth for the USA in the 68’, sending a left-footed laser from outside the box.
Maddie Padelski penned her name in the scoresheet in the 86’, striking on goal with enough force to get past goalkeeper Woo Sumin.
The United States ends the group stage with a 2W-0D-1L record and second place in Group B. The Stars and Stripes will return to CFC Stadium on Saturday to face Nigeria, winners of Group A, in the quarterfinals.
Another historic night for the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic lost 1-nil to Nigeria in Group A at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The game changer for the hosts was goalkeeper Jaylene Rondon, who finished with 12 saves. One of her most important moments came in the 52’, denying Faridat Abdulwahab the first goal for the African side.
Leoneidy Sano attempted to put the hosts in the lead in the 68’, but Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma stopped her efforts.
Alexa Castro created another chance for the Dominican Republic in the 75’, unable to get past defender Hannah Ibrahim.
The lone goal of the match came in the 89’, a long shot from Shakirat Moshood to award Nigeria the victory and the top spot in Group A.
The Dominican Republic closed its historical participation with a 0W-1D-2L record. Nigeria qualifies as leader of Group A, facing the USYNT in their quarterfinal match on Saturday.
