Lionel Messi has said that he has other priorities in his career rather than fixating on participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Argentina. While the 37-year-old has left the door open to competing in the next edition of the World Cup, he said that it is more important for him to stay happy and healthy.
After winning the America Legend award from Spanish media outlet MARCA, Messi extensively discussed what he was focused on, at the event.
As per ESPN, he said, “When I get to do what I love, I am happy. I value that more than reaching the 2026 tournament. I haven’t set a goal to reach the World Cup, but more so to live day-to-day and be well.”
Lionel Messi has secured everything there is to win in the world of football. The Argentine maestro completed his trophy cabinet in 2022, winning the World Cup in Qatar. While he had earlier suggested that the previous edition was his last World Cup tournament, fans could see the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner lead La Albiceleste for one last time in 2026.
Speaking about his future at the MARCA event, Messi said, “In the moment, we will see. I don’t like to accelerate time or look ahead. I try to enjoy every day. I hope I can keep playing at this level to feel good and be happy.”
Lionel Messi also spoke about his move to the USA from Europe. “The step I took to come here didn’t mean retiring,” Messi said. “We came here to try and keep making this team big, to help the development by winning titles, which we have and we’re close to clinching role.”
Despite leaving Europe, Lionel Messi continues to be one of the best players in the world. He recently put up a brilliant show with Argentina, scoring his 58th career hat trick. He led Inter Miami to the MLS Supporters Shield this season with a match-winning performance against Columbus FC.
Lionel Messi has won 48 major trophies in his career but the Argentine is keen on adding more to his collection. With Inter Miami set to play their last Eastern Conference league fixture against New England Revolution this weekend, the Argentine will now have his eyes set on the playoffs. Messi will be looking to make history by guiding the Herons to their first-ever MLS Cup in history.
