Left wanting more after Episode 3 of Chasing the Sun 2 ended last week smack-bang in the middle of SA’s World Cup quarter-final against France, the docuseries’ cult following wanted to know one thing: the reason why they were left high and dry.
Judging by the way in which the fourth episode unfolded, the answer is that it was a storytelling tactic where producers show the audience the epic second half in the one-point win as a means to depict the emotional Mount Everest the Springboks had had to climb against France. That way, they explained why the defending champions were initially found lacking in the desperation stakes in the real purpose of the episode, addressing the great escape against England.
To that end, the episode begins with lock, Eben Etzebeth – sin-binned in the previous episode for a high tackle on French tighthead prop Uini Atonio – tearing his hair out as he counts down the seconds of the four minutes left of his time off the field, how he atones by scoring the Boks’ fourth try of the match, to the wild celebrations of the young boy who watched him on TV in South Africa and renamed him “Elizabedi”.
