The 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup champions West Indies became the last team to qualify for the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Despite suffering a defeat in their first clash against South Africa, the Women in Maroon showed a great deal of intent in the subsequent matches against Bangladesh and Scotland to boost their net run rate.
Chasing 142, the duo of Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph started in a strong fashion to score 67 runs in the powerplay, which all but quashed England’s hopes. While Matthews smashed a 38-ball 50, her partner Joseph hit a 38-ball 52 to put England under immense pressure. However, two quick wickets gave England a lifeline.
But Deandra Dottin walked out and ended English hopes with a sizzling 17-ball 27 that included two sixes against Charlie Dean. Aaliyah Alleyne finished the job with a four against Sophie Ecclestone. It was West Indies’ first win against England in 14 matches and their first against the them since the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Earlier, South Africa confirmed their qualification mid-way through the West Indies’ run chase, given their superior net run rate. It will be the second straight semi-final appearance for South Africa. Laura Wolvaardt and co-started the tournament in a strong fashion, with a crushing win over West Indies.
They then beat Scotland before suffering a rare loss at the hands of England in a low-scoring thriller. However, they crushed Bangladesh in the final game by seven wickets. Still, they had to wait for the clash between West Indies and England to confirm their place in the last four.
Australia and New Zealand have already confirmed their place as the two semi-finalists from Group A. Australia will face South Africa on October 17 in Dubai, while New Zealand will lock horns with West Indies in Sharjah on October 18.
