Searching for the best venues for its championships, CIF San Diego Section commissioner Joe Heinz and assistant commissioner Todd Cassen have found two new gems.
While the Open Division football championship game remains at Snapdragon Stadium, Divisions 5AA and 6 will be played at Palomar College’s new stadium.
Divisions 1 through 5 will be played at Southwestern College.
The Open Division girls volleyball championship match will be played at the Jenny Craig Center on the USD campus, while Divisions 3 through 5 are set for MiraCosta College’s new Kinesiology, Health and Nutrition Building (KHAN) and Gymnasium Complex.
Divisions 1 and 2 are scheduled for Southwestern College.
“We have some great high school facilities in San Diego, and we get great cooperation from those schools,” Cassen said. “But we feel our championship contests should be on a college campus if at all possible.
“The new sites at Palomar and MiraCosta are really nice. I think the players and the fans will really enjoy them. We wish we could do more at Snapdragon, but it’s expensive. It’s a great facility, but we’d need two full days for all our games. All those games take a toll on the field, so it’s really not feasible.
“Believe me, it’s not easy finding sites for all the championships, but finding the best venues is something we do for the teams and fans involved.”
Palomar’s new stadium seats 3,600 fans; it will host flag football as well as the lower-level football championships. MiraCosta’s gym, which opened in January, seats 800. Athletic director Pat Conahan contacted the CIF to offer the facility.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for us to show off a little, get players and fans on our campus,” he said. “Hopefully, this leads to a nice partnership and we can host more events.”
