Brazil top men’s and women’s Futsal rankings as FIFA focuses spotlight on short form game – Inside World Football

October 14 – The second edition of FIFA’s Futsal World Ranking see Brazil top both the men’s and women’s sections, increasing their dominance of the men’s ranking following their World Cup win in Uzbekistan last month.
FIFA has ambition for Futsal having said in its strategic report it will recommending its inclusion as an Olympic sport for 2028 to the IOC. If successful, its ranking will subsequently become of increased importance.
Currently the rankings have 179 teams in the men’s and 65 in the women’s (an increase of five since the first set of rankings were released).
Movement in the men’s rankings is dominated by the Uzbekistan World Cup which completed October 6 with Brazil beating Argentina 2-1 in the final, and Ukraine beating France 7-1 to take the bronze medal.
Portugal hold on to second place in the rankings despite being knocked out of the World Cup at the round of 16 stage. FIFA highlight three teams who have made significant progress in the top ten – runners-up Argentina (3rd, up 2), quarter-finalists Kazakhstan (5th, up 3) and bronze medallists Ukraine (9th, up 3), and overtaking France (10th, unchanged).
The rankings generally show a much more even spread amongst amongst the confederations of teams within the top 20 than in the full 11-a-side rankings. In particular the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) nations fare well in terms of strength in depth with three teams ranked in the top 10 in both the women’s ranking (Thailand 6, Iran 9, and Japan 10) with Vietnam just outside ranked 11th.
The inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup will be played in 2025 in the Philippines with 16 teams.
