As well as South Africa, matches will also be played in Zimbabwe and Namibia, the tournament’s co-hosts. The venues were also used for the 2003 World Cup, with Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium being the largest, with a capacity of 30,000 for the October-November 2027 tournament.
South Africa 2027 Cricket World Cup is set to break record, South Africa’s cricket director Pholetsi Moseki has announced, reports AFP. As well as South Africa, matches will be played in Zimbabwe and Namibia, the tournament’s co-hosts.
South Africa’s regular Test venues (Wanderers in Johannesburg, SuperSport Park in Centurion, Newlands in Cape Town, Kingsmead in Durban and St George’s Park in Gqeberha) will host matches. Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl and Buffalo Park in East London will be the other venues.
Moseki told South Africa’s News24 website that the eight South African venues were chosen for “scientific” reasons, including proximity to an airport and availability of hotel rooms. The eight venues were used when South Africa hosted the 2003 World Cup. Benoni, Potchefstroom and Kimberley also hosted matches in 2003, but they are not included in the 2027 edition, which will take place in October and November 2027.
-Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium. With a capacity of around 30,000, it is the largest and most important stadium in South Africa. It hosted the final of the 2003 World Cup, the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and a semi-final of the 2009 Champions Trophy.
-Newlands, Cape Town: This picturesque venue, backed by Table Mountain, has hosted more Tests (60) than any other venue in South Africa. It will also host the final of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. It also hosted a semi-final of the 2007 T20 World Cup.
-SuperSport Park, Centurion: This purpose-built stadium on the outskirts of Pretoria hosted the final of the 2009 Champions Trophy.
-Kingsmead, Durban: Venue for the 2003 World Cup semi-finals and the 2007 T20 World Cup.
-St George’s Park, Gqeberha: South Africa’s oldest Test ground. Staged a semi-final of the 2003 World Cup.
-Boland Park, Paarl: Another picturesque venue in the Cape Winelands. In addition to the previous five grounds, one of the venues for a team in the SA20 franchise competition. It hosted three matches in the 2003 World Cup.
-Springbok Park, Bloemfontein: Bloemfontein hosted five Test and two Super Six matches in the 2003 World Cup.
-Buffalo Park, East London: Rarely used for men’s internationals in recent years, but has hosted a Test match and was the venue for the Super Six in 2003.
Held every four years since 1975, the Cricket World Cup is the premier tournament at national team level. It has always been played with 16 teams qualifying from a total of 97, but in 2027 the tournament will feature only fourteen teams.
After the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, it is one of the world’s biggest sporting events in terms of media coverage and audience. In recent years, it has attracted more than 2.5 billion viewers.
The reigning champion is Australia, who beat India in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Australia are the most successful team at the World Cup with 6 titles, followed by the West Indies, a team made up of several Caribbean nations, and India, who have both won twice. The other three teams to have lifted the trophy are Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act”. He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.

Pierre de Coubertin once said cricket has “practically no appeal for those who are not British”. While he expressed doubts about the Olympic viability of cricket, lacrosse and baseball, Philip Barker wonders how the man who helped revive the modern Games would have reacted to new sports at Los Angeles 2028.
