COLLINSVILLE — DeKalb County crowns a champion in most sports every year; volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, and golf all hold tournaments to decide a champion. This year, DeKalb County added soccer to that list.
The first DeKalb County Soccer Tournament took place April 5-6 at Collinsville High School.
In the semifinal, Crossville’s varsity men faced Geraldine. Crossville relied on ball possession and the foot of Josue Hernandez, who scored both goals for the Lions in the 15th and 65th minutes. A late goal by the Bulldogs made the final score 2-1.
After Collinsville defeated Sylvania 4-0 in the second semifinal, the championship match was set. Crossville and Collinsville played a hard-fought game Saturday.
Armando Franco scored the only goal of the match in the 34th minute, and keepers Diego Gomez and Eric Jimenez kept a clean sheet for the game, as the Lions defeated the Panthers 1-0.
Crossville coaches Jimmy Franco and Peyton Knop explained this matchup has always been a rivalry.
“365 days of bragging rights come from this game,” Franco said. “Our match earlier in the season ended in a draw, so those bragging rights were still up for grabs. The fact that this match was for a trophy only made the players on both sides want to win that much more.
“Credit to Collinsville – they played a great game. At the end of the day, our men wanted to lift a trophy, and that focus showed on the field.”
Hernandez, Armando Franco and Johnny Domingo were named to the all-tournament team. Omar Gomez was selected MVP of the tournament.
