Which Alabama football position groups most impressed Kalen DeBoer through spring practice? – AL.com

Alabama football is finished with the main portion of spring practice. The Crimson Tide has just one session remaining, Saturday’s A-Day game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Kalen DeBoer spoke positively of how the team has handled his first spring in charge, after he replaced the retired Nick Saban in January. On Thursday, after the final regular practice, he was asked which position groups have impressed him the most so far.
He first explained his criteria.
“I think impressed would probably be kind of related to maybe where you felt like you were maybe a little bit younger,” DeBoer said. “And so impressed, there’s a couple of things, right? The sides of the ball or position groups that have the veterans, you expect them to go out there and get it done.”
DeBoer first pointed to the Crimson Tide’s defensive line as a younger group he’s high on. The group saw big changes over the offseason, with Kane Wommack taking over as defensive coordinator and changing up the system.
That wasn’t the only defensive group that caught DeBoer’s eye.
“I also think defensive back-wise, there’s some young guys that have grown,” DeBoer said. “So I’m impressed with some individual play, considering how old and how young they are.”
Offensively, DeBoer pointed to the Crimson Tide’s running backs. With Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams both gone, players like Jam Miller and Richard Young will look to pick up in production this season.
The coach was also impressed by his group at football’s most important position.
“Just the number of quarterbacks that we have that you would feel comfortable putting out in a football game,” DeBoer said. “I mean, really all four. They are extremely solid. Doing a great job of their accuracy, their reads, competitiveness. I mean, just picking things up each and every day. That group has done a really good job — I don’t want to say top to bottom — just across the board.”
Jalen Milroe returns as the Crimson Tide’s starter. Behind him, Ty Simpson and Dylan Lonergan are back, along with Washington transfer Austin Mack.
DeBoer’s first A-Day game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It will be aired on ESPN.
