Chaparral and Mountain Vista, two of the best Colorado girls high school soccer teams, played each other in an early season showdown on April 2.
The game matched Chap, ranked first in the CHSAA’s RPI rankings, against No. 3 Vista, one of the state’s top teams each spring.
The game also featured Vista’s dangerous offensive potential against the defense of Chap.
The Golden Eagles controlled play for most of the game, but it wasn’t until goals scored by Lily Boydstun and Jordan Hopkins in the second half that Vista earned a 2-0 Continental League victory.
Mountain Vista improved to 5-0 overall after the win while Chap lost for the first time in five outings.
“It was a very good game,” said Vista Head Coach Theresa Echtermeyer. “Chap is a very good team and they came in undefeated like us. We did better in the second half than in the first half. I think maybe things were a little unsettled but once we got a hold of the ball in transition, we were better. I thought we possessed the ball pretty well.”
Chap played without Rowan LsPiano who is out after having knee surgery. The Golden Eagles relied on its defense which held up for a half.
“We were defending a lot,“ admitted Chap Head Coach Greg Gillmor. “We dedicated a lot of our players to defending and just tried to prevent them from scoring. We know Mountain Vista is one of the teams to beat in the state.”
Gillmor felt Boydstun’s goal made a key difference.
The senior scored her fifth goal in four games when she darted to the middle of the field and sent a shot into the corner of the goal.
“Lily made a great play to get that first goal and we had to do some things to try to tie it back up, went into an attacking formation and they took advantage of that,” said Gillmor. “That’s how we have to look at it that it will do us some good down the road. It’s a tough league and I think it is the best league in the state.’’
The goals by Boydstun and Hopkins give Vista a combined nine goals in games they’ve played.
“It is early in the season, but when you play in the Continental League every game is going to be a battle,” said Echtermeyer, who has won four state titles and compiled a 176-41-16 record in her 14th season as the girls’ coach at Vista. She is also the boys’ coach.
