The U.S. women’s soccer team will begin playing next Thursday, July 25, and former Nittany Lion Sam Coffey will be showing off her skills with a chance to bring home the gold.
In 2023, Coffey was named to the USWNT training camp roster, and her hard work paid off. Coffey was named to the 18-person U.S. Women’s Olympic Soccer squad on June 26 this year.
Coffey played high school club soccer for Match-Fit Academy and New York Soccer Club, where she was named Region 1 Team honoree five times and named an All-American.
In high school, the Sleepy Hollow, New York, native played for the Masters School and earned the title of team MVP all four years and was a team captain for two seasons.
In high school, Coffey scored a total of 100 goals and competed on the U18 Women’s National Team. She later competed for the U19 and U20 National Teams, captaining for both.
Before transferring to Penn State in 2019, Coffey spent two seasons at Boston College where she accumulated 17 goals and 24 assists.
During her time at Penn State, Coffey was a consistent and dominant competitor.

The star midfielder and forward was a Nittany Lion from 2019-2021. Throughout her three years on the team, Coffey scored 25 goals and had 30 assists in 61 starts.
In the 2019 Big Ten championship game against Michigan, Coffey scored a late equalizer to force overtime, and the Nittany Lions went on to win 2-1.
On Oct. 8, 2021, Coffey scored a hat trick and notched an assist against Maryland, helping Penn State take home the 5-1 win.
During her collegiate career, Coffey racked up numerous accolades and achievements.
In her first season with Penn State in 2019, Coffey ranked second in the Big Ten with 32 points and tied for second in the Big Ten with 11 goals.
Additionally, Coffey led Penn State in assists in 2021 and became the 50th player in NCAA Division I soccer history to score 40 goals and 40 assists in a career.
After her time at Penn State, Coffey was drafted by the Portland Thorns.
Following a debut season with one goal and two assists in 21 matches, Coffey received an extension through the 2025 season.
So far this season, Coffey has scored two goals and one assist through 15 games.
As Coffey makes her Olympic game debut, she is set to wear her classic No. 17, which has remained with her since her time in the blue and white uniform.
Coffey’s track record of success in all levels of soccer have proved her to be a key and dominant player in Paris.
