Nebraska football has officially hired John Butler as the program’s next secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator.
Most recently, Butler served as an assistant coach for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills for the past six years as their defensive backs coach. Overall, Butler has 29 seasons of coaching experience.
“John Butler is one of the premier defensive backs coaches in football,” Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule said in a statement. “He has a diverse coaching background and a history of being part of winning organizations, and elite defenses at the highest level of football. He will be an outstanding addition to the Nebraska football program and our defensive staff.”

In addition to the Bills, Butler has been an assistant coach with the NFL’s Houston Texans, as well as Penn State, South Carolina, Minnesota, Harvard, Texas State and Midwestern State.
“I am excited to join Coach Rhule, this staff and the great tradition of Nebraska Football and the Blackshirt Defense,” Butler said in a statement. “I look forward to working with our players to develop them as players, students and young men, Day by Day!”
Butler replaces Evan Cooper, who resigned from Rhule’s staff less than a month from the start of preseason camp.
Cooper worked as the program’s secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator.
