New Delhi: Indian player Suryakumar Yadav has reacted to the catch dismissal of South African batter David Miller in the T20 World Cup 2024 final.
India won their second T20 World Cup title after registering a seven-run win over the Proteas in a nerve-wrangling summit clash in Barbados. Thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s breathtaking catch when David Miller attempted to clear one over long-off boundary at a stage where South Africa needed 16 runs of six deliveries.
Suryakumar moved towards his left from long-off to pluck a blinder and followed up with a juggle. As it seemed he would step into the boundary ropes, he lobbed the ball and returned back inside the boundary area to complete the most important catch of his career.
However, there were claims over the lack of transparency of the catch. While some cited different angles showed the player stepping into the boundary cushion while some said that the boundary ropes were pushed during the second innings to give the Men in Blue an undue advantage.
“I didn’t touch the line when I caught the ball in the final match against South Africa. We can’t keep everyone happy. I did what occurred to me as correct. By the grace of God, I was there when the ball came towards me. I got a chance to take the catch. I am relishing that moment,” Suryakumar told media.
“I had practiced many times to take a catch like that one. During the match, my mind was calm. God gave me an opportunity to do well for the country,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav is currently on a break from the Zimbabwe T20I series with all the stars of the triumphant T20 World Cup team being rested. The Mumbai batter is likely to be included in the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, where India plays three T20Is and as many One-Day Internationals.
The middle-order batter made 199 runs in eight matches at an average of 28.42 and a strike rate of 135.37. He was the team’s second most run-getter in the showpiece event behind skipper Rohit Sharma (257).
