Ebury Spotlight has scored Last Boy of ’66, the story of England’s World Cup winning team by Geoff Hurst, the only surviving player of “England’s greatest ever football team”.
Senior editorial director Lorna Russell acquired world all language rights from Simon Dent at HERO talent agency, acting on behalf Terry Baker of A1 Sporting Speakers and Events Ltd. Publication is scheduled for October 2024.
Each chapter in Last Boy of ’66 is dedicated to a member of the 1966 England team to tell “their collective story”. Hurst also spotlights football manager Alf Ramsey and footballer Jimmy Greaves.
The publisher added: “It was a poignant journey for the boys of ’66, but they achieved something that no other Englishman has ever experienced. Here Geoff brings them all together, one last time, to see them make history.”
Russell said: “The Last Boy of ’66 is Sir Geoff’s own, utterly captivating story of the team he was part of, and how they became the best in the world. He takes us back through his memories in such rich, first-hand detail, and it feels like a privilege to get to know each player, and Sir Alf of course, as a person and a pro. Then the final itself is an absolute page-turner. Sir Geoff’s on-the-pitch perspective brings it all alive, moment by moment, and it’s impossible not to be completely swept up in the emotion of it all. This a truly special book, for historians and fans alike, and we are so proud to be publishing it.”
Hurst added: “This isn’t the first book with my name on the cover. I did a memoir in 2001, many years after I had left football for good. But I was not ready to dig as deep as I find I want to now as I advance through my ninth decade. So, here are my final thoughts about 1966 and all that.”
