Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo have faced off nine times in their NBA careers, and those games have never disappointed. They go head-to-head again Saturday — but like never before. Doncic and Slovenia will play Antetokounmpo and Greece in one of the eight semifinal games of the Olympic qualifying tournaments that are taking place to determine the last four berths in the men’s basketball field for the Paris Games. The game in Piraeus, Greece, is the first time the two megastars will face one another while representing their senior national teams.
German investigators say they have arrested a third suspect in an attempt to blackmail the family of former Formula 1 race driver Michael Schumacher. The 52-year-old man, who was detained on Thursday in a town near Wuppertal in western Germany, had worked for the family as a security officer. That’s according to German news agency dpa, citing prosecutors. Prosecutors in the case arrested two men last month and said the pair, a father and son, had told employees of the family that they were in possession of files that the family wouldn’t want published.

Buildup to Saturday’s Euro 2024 quarterfinal match between Turkey and the Netherlands has been overshadowed by a diplomatic row. Turkey defender Merih Demiral’s hand gesture after scoring against Austria has sparked a dispute between his country and host nation Germany. Demiral was banned on Friday for making a gesture used by Turkish nationalists and associated with an ultra-nationalist group. It led to condemnation from German authorities and strong pushback from Turkish counterparts, who accused the hosts of xenophobia. The row prompted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to change his plans and attend the match in Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Kickoff is at 9 p.m. local time.
Excitement levels are rising among fans as the European Championship goes deeper into the knockout stage. Germany’s supporters have been showing patriotic fervor across the country by waving their black-red-and-yellow flags and flooding fan zones in the host cities. The same could be said of the Dutch. They stand out with their splash of orange as they march to stadiums for the team’s matches. Cristiano Ronaldo fever is still strong and Portugal fans flocking to training sessions to catch a glimpse of their favorite player.
The high-energy, heavy-metal soccer that brought Jurgen Klopp so much success at Liverpool isn’t going to disappear now he has gone. Arne Slot has been presented as Klopp’s successor as Liverpool manager and the Dutchman says he isn’t planning to change too much. Slot says “One of the reasons why (Liverpool) came to me was my playing style is not so much different.” Richard Hughes is Liverpool’s new sporting director who identified Slot as the ideal replacement for Klopp. He says the new manager’s playing style “lend really well with the kind of squad we have, the supporters and the football club as a whole.”
The World Anti-Doping Agency says it is “disappointed” to learn of a U.S. criminal investigation into the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who were allowed to continue competing despite testing positive for a banned substance in 2021. The Associated Press reported Thursday that U.S. investigators had launched a probe into the case and ordered a top official of the international swimming federation to testify. WADA says the reports about the investigation “validate the concerns expressed broadly by the international community” about a U.S. law that allows investigations into suspected doping conspiracies even if they occurred outside the United States.
The All England Club is monitoring social media to try to help protect players at Wimbledon from cyberbullying for the first time this year. Tournament director Jamie Baker said Friday that if there is something of concern, the club’s security team can help look into it. The police could also become involved if the harassment rises to that level of concern. Baker declined to say whether that has happened yet during the two-week Grand Slam tournament that began on Monday. The French Tennis Federation began this sort of monitoring of online comments during last year’s French Open.
Jude Bellingham has avoided an immediate ban after the England midfielder appeared to make an offensive gesture in his team’s win over Slovakia. Bellingham will be available for England’s game against Switzerland on Saturday for a place in the semifinals after UEFA imposed a one-game ban but said it “is not immediately enforced and is subject to a probationary period” of a year. Bellingham seemed to make a gesture with his hand toward his crotch after scoring an overhead kick to level the score Sunday as England went on to win 2-1 in extra time. The Real Madrid midfielder will have to pay a fine of 30,000 euros.
UEFA has suspended Turkey player Merih Demiral for two matches for making a controversial gesture at the European Championship. The governing body says it has banned the defender “for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, for violating the basic rules of decent conduct, for using sports events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football into disrepute.” Demiral scored both goals Tuesday in a 2-1 win over Austria to earn Turkey’s place in the quarterfinals and celebrated with a hand sign associated with an ultra-nationalist group. Demiral will miss Turkey’s match with the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday.

Rain has delayed the start of play on the outside courts at Wimbledon and threatens to disrupt much of the day at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. The covers remained pulled over the courts at the scheduled start of 11 a.m. (1000 GMT), with organizers saying play would not start until noon (1100 GMT) at the earliest. The local forecast calls for showers throughout the day. Play on the two main courts, which both have retractable roofs, was set to start as scheduled in the afternoon. On Centre Court, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was playing Frances Tiafoe in the third round, while Jasmine Paolini faced Bianca Andreescu on No. 1 Court.
Kyle Snyder already has one of the best resumes ever for a U.S. wrestler, and he’s just now hitting his prime. He became the youngest American wrestler ever to win Olympic gold during the 2016 Games, then he claimed silver at the Tokyo Games. He was a three-time NCAA champion at Ohio State who has won three world championships. Now 28, he looks to add to his legacy. If he wins gold at the Paris Olympics in the 97 kilogram freestyle category, he would join George Mehnert, John Smith and Bruce Baumgartner as the only two-time American gold medalists.
