Maryland lands commitment from four-star quarterback Malik Washington – The Washington Post

Two-time All-Met Malik Washington is considered a four-star recruit in the Class of 2025.
The Maryland football program landed its highest-rated quarterback commit in years Friday.
Spalding’s Malik Washington, who is ranked 14th among quarterbacks in the Class of 2025 by 247Sports with four stars, announced that he plans to join the Terrapins next year. He picked Maryland over finalists Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Central Florida.
“If you can be great, why not be great at home? Your family is here to support you and watch you,” Washington said on the 247Sports live stream. “If you’re really one of them guys, you’ll be a Terp.”
Washington was named first-team All-Met in each of the past two seasons after starring for Spalding, which is in Severn, Md. He accounted for 2,288 yards and 27 touchdowns last season as a junior. He has led Spalding to consecutive Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference titles and participated in this year’s Elite 11 quarterback competition.
Three-star cornerback Jayden Shipps, Washington’s Spalding teammate, joined Washington on the live stream and also committed to Maryland. The Terrapins have landed several Cavaliers in recent years, including three-star linebacker Keyshawn Flowers in the Class of 2024.
247Sports called Washington a “play-making quarterback that excels as a middle-third passer” and said he “should be viewed as an exciting dual-threat talent that can win at the Power Four level with some seasoning.”
Washington could get early playing time when he joins the Terrapins. Taulia Tagovailoa, the program record holder in almost all passing categories, is gone and has no clear successor. Maryland’s starter to open the 2024 season probably will be Billy Edwards Jr., Cameron Edge or North Carolina State transfer MJ Morris.
