CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – Late Wednesday night, Christiansburg football got a new identity–
Sort of.
Matt Herron will lead the Blue Demons for the upcoming football season.
The school announced the head coaching decision on social media.
Herron worked as the offensive coordinator at Christiansburg under former head coach Alex Wilkens for six seasons.
Wilkens stepped away from coaching last month to spend more time with family.
“I’ve been working with these kids for a while and lucky to be named the head coach now so that we can continue to work and grow and do better things,” Herron says. “I just think that critical aspect of being able to come in and go I know these kids they know me they know everybody has a mutual understanding of what we’re about and what we need to do and where we need to grow. So I think that’s just super helpful to be able to rise up from that on staff and continue for these kids
Herron is a Roanoke native and graduated from Northside High School and Roanoke College.
In addition to working on the Christiansburg football coaching staff, Herron also helped coach the Blue Demon baseball team.
He says that the exposure to the talented coaches in his life has helped put him in a position to continue to build upon a talented Christiansburg football program.
“Though I didn’t play football in college, I played baseball, I’ve been lucky enough to grow up around some really good coaches. My rec coach was coach Bob Price who won four state championships at Roanoke Catholic. You know, I got to play under coach Jim Hickam. I got to play under Coach Torrance. I got to work with Coach Fulton and a myriad of other coaches,” he explains. “I’ve really been lucky to learn from all these people even going back to Little League football, just growing up with a real good base and wealth and knowledge in football. So again, working here at Christiansburg, Coach Cromer, the athletic director, so just being able to ask questions and pick the brains of these really, really impactful coaches in our area. I think it’s benefited me.”
Also announced Wednesday night, Morgan Taylor is now the head coach of the Blue Demon volleyball program.
