New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, the man famous for running out MS Dhoni during the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final match, which turned out to be the latter's last international match, announced his retirement from international cricket on January 8 (Wednesday).
Guptill, who last played an international match way back in October 2022 against Bangladesh in Christchurch, was one of the most destructive openers in world cricket during his peak and, in fact, still holds plenty of world records. Here are the top three records held by the New Zealander.
Most runs and sixes in T20Is for New Zealand
Guptill has scored 3531 runs in 122 T20Is, the most by any New Zealander in the shortest format. His 173 sixes in T20Is is also the most by a Kiwi batter as well. Overall, in terms of clearing the fence, only India’s Rohit Sharma (205) has hit more sixes than Guptill in T20Is.
Martin Guptill ODI
Highest individual score by a batter in ODI World Cup
Guptill, who has played 198 ODIs for the Blackcaps, also holds the record for the highest individual score in ODI World Cup history. His unbeaten 237 against West Indies during the quarterfinal of the ODI World Cup 2015 is yet to be bettered by anyone else'.
Martin Guptill 237 vs West Indies
He is also one of only three batters in the world to hit a double century in a World Cup match and the only one to do it in a knockout game. The other two players to hit an ODI World Cup double hundred are West Indies’ Chris Gayle (vs Zimbabwe in 2015) and Australia’s Glenn Maxwell (vs Afghanistan in 2023)
Only player with three unbeaten 180-plus scores in ODIs
Guptill has three scores of 180-plus in ODIs (189* against England in 2013, 237* against West Indies in 2015 and 180* against South Africa in 2017) and this is the joint most by any batter in the format’s history. India’s Rohit and Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman are the other two batters with three 180-plus scores in ODIs.
Martin Guptill 180 plus
However, Guptill is the only batter in the world with three unbeaten 180+ scores in ODI cricket.
