Cricket Australia has unveiled its 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a tournament set to take place in a hybrid mode that will be co-hosted by Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9. Australia’s triumph in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 was historic, marking their sixth title and solidifying their position as cricketing giants. However, some key players from that championship-winning squad have not been included in the Champions Trophy lineup.

Sean Abbott, a 32-year-old bowling all-rounder, featured briefly in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He played just one match against Bangladesh, stepping in for Mitchell Starc, where he delivered a commendable performance by taking two wickets. Despite this, Abbott has not been included in the Champions Trophy squad, likely due to his recent performances. His last ODI appearance was against Pakistan in November 2024, and the selectors seem to have opted for fresh options in his role.

Green’s absence from the Champions Trophy squad is a blow, but his injury status made his exclusion inevitable.

David Warner, one of the standout performers in the 2023 World Cup, is also absent from the 2025 Champions Trophy squad. However, his exclusion comes on his own terms, as he retired from ODI cricket after Australia’s triumphant World Cup final against India. Warner was instrumental in Australia’s success, amassing 535 runs in 11 matches, including two centuries. His retirement marks the end of an illustrious ODI career, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
The 2025 squad reflects a shift towards a younger, more dynamic lineup. Matthew Short and Aaron Hardie have received their maiden call-ups, signaling Australia’s intent to groom fresh talent for the future. Both players bring versatility, with Short known for his explosive batting and Hardie excelling as an all-rounder.
Additionally, right-arm medium-fast bowler Nathan Ellis makes a comeback after last playing an ODI in September 2023 against South Africa. Ellis’s inclusion highlights the selectors’ focus on enhancing the team’s bowling depth for the tournament.
