R.A. Long’s Beiro Orozco drills a shot in the top right corner against Mark Morris in the cross-town rivalry matchup on Tuesday, March 26 at Longview Memorial Stadium.
The Lumberjacks rode a hat trick from Liam Hendrickson to a 8-1 win over Washougal, Wednesday night, at Longview Memorial Stadium in 2A Greater St. Helens League boy soccer action.
“The team took care of business tonight, falling behind early but controlled the match and got the result,” R.A. Long coach Max Anderson said.
R.A. Long was forced to come from behind in the win after allowing a quick goal in the third minute of action. From that point, the Lumberjacks made sure to file their reply over and over and over again.
The Jacks picked up their first goal in the sixth minute when Hendrickson used his head to redirect a pass from Andres Orozco into the back of the net.
“We continued pressing for the lead and were probably playing too quickly for our own good,” Anderson noted. “Lots of effort, but not many quality opportunities. Once we settled down, the goals followed.”
Paredes punched in the next two goals for the hosts, with his first score coming in the 20th minute off an assist from Hendrickson, and his second score coming seven minutes later on a feed from Krager Clark.
Not to be forgotten, Hendrickson found the back of the net again in the 30th minute on another assist from Orozco. Four minutes later a direct kick by Gavin Geier gave R.A. Long a 5-1 lead to enjoy during the intermission.
After a slow start to the second half, Hendrickson was able to visit the haberdashery in the 54th minute when he connected for his third goal of the game, this time off an assist from Jacob Isaacson to net the hat trick.
The Jacks kept the pressure on down the stretch and Beiro Orozco was able to assist two goals in the final ten minutes. In the 70th minute it was Andres Orozco who took the pass and deposited it behind the Panthers’ keeper, and in the 73 minute Rodolfo Santiago posted the Jacks’ final goal of the evening.
“The key to us getting on track tonight was the central midfield play of Alex Wooden, Geier, and Beiro Orozco,” Anderson said. “They locked things down tonight, limiting Washougal’s ability to attack through their midfield, making them easier to defend. They also did a great job helping our team transition forward into attack.”
R.A. Long (10-2, 9-2 league) is scheduled to host Hockinson on Tuesday at 7 p. First, the Lumberjacks will make a trip to Woodland to play the Beavers at 7 p.m. on Friday.
The Monarchs were without their starting goalkeeper Sam Allen, due to a red card obtained in their previous game, and fell to the Trappers 2-0, Wednesday, on the road in 2A GSHL boys soccer play.
Mark Morris’ third-string keeper Anthony Roseman stepped in for Allen and tallied 18 saves in the loss.
The game was tied 0-0 after the first half, but the Trappers got on the board quickly in the second half in the 45th minute and added an insurance goal in the 68th minute.
“Complete effort all around from the squad with only 13 kids on tonight’s game roster,” Mark Morris coach Luis Garcia said.
Mark Morris (1-11, 1-10) is set to hit the road to face Ridgefield on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Before that, the Monarchs were set to host Columbia River on Friday, also at 7 p.m.
