How is Morocco’s railway transport preparing for the upcoming centennial 2030 FIFA World Cup?
The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be the 24th FIFA World Cup, with the final tournament taking place in the summer of 2030, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The tournament will be special as it marks a hundred years since the first World Cup. It will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay each hosting an opening match.
One of the key aspects of Morocco’s preparation for such a significant event is the development of its railway infrastructure.

As part of its World Cup preparations, Morocco has announced a tender for the construction of a high-speed railway line, which is part of a $37 billion strategy.
This strategy aims to connect the country’s cities, ports, and airports with high-speed trains.
The Moroccan railway operator plans to build a 375-kilometer line connecting Kenitra on the northwest coast to Marrakech in the south.
The project will be implemented in seven sections, ranging from 36 to 64 kilometers, and will pass through major cities such as Rabat-Salé, Casablanca, and Marrakech.
Transport and Logistics Minister Mohamed Abdeljalil presented the plans of the National Railways Office (ONCF), which include the design and construction of a railway line for trains traveling at speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour, as well as the construction of stations, communication systems, and a maintenance center in Marrakech.
The high-speed line is part of a plan to improve Morocco’s railway network, which is expected to create 300,000 jobs by 2040 and connect 43 cities.
By then, it is expected that 87% of the country’s population will have access to railway transport, significantly more than the current just over 50%.
Currently, Morocco’s railway network extends 1,200 kilometers, serving passengers at 120 stations and cargo at 15 stations.
In cities such as Agadir, Fez, Marrakech, and Tangier, tram or light rail lines are planned for construction.
In November last year, five years after the launch of Morocco’s first high-speed line connecting Tangier to Casablanca, ONCF announced plans to order 168 new trains, including 18 high-speed ones. The delivery schedule is planned for the period from 2027 to 2030.
Improving railway services is of great importance to Morocco in preparation for jointly hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
