TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Football Association, PSSI, will tighten the security system at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium for the Indonesian National Team’s 2026 World Cup qualifier home matches. In November, the Garuda squad will host Japan and Saudi Arabia in the third round of the Asia qualifiers.
PSSI will install 100 CCTV cameras around the stadium. With the additional surveillance cameras, the match organizers can monitor spectators’ mobility more closely.
The previous home match against Australia last September was PSSI’s learning experience. At the time, there was a surge of spectators, with some forgoing tickets. Several individuals were also caught disturbing other spectators by smoking and drinking alcohol in the stands.
“We at PSSI continue to improvise. Yesterday, I had a meeting and immediately called the director of GBK, Mr. Rakhmadi Kusumo, conveying that PSSI will try to install 100 CCTV cameras at GBK,” said PSSI chief Erick Thohir, in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
The ticketing process for the World Cup qualifiers will also be monitored. Prospective buyers are now required to be Garuda ID holders by first registering on the KitaGaruda website. “We will try to ask all fans of the national team to register with Garuda ID so the data is stored in the database,” said Erick.
“Because the safety was quite a concern during the last match between Indonesia and Australia. That’s why I ask for the security to truly be maintained,” added the man, who also serves as the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises.
Enthusiasm to watch the national football team matches live has sharply increased since entering the third round of 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers. It is heightened by the number of European diaspora players boosting the Garuda squad, such as the Eredivisie duo Mees Hilgers and Eliano Rijnders, and possibly Kevin Diks from FC Kobenhavn.
The Indonesia National Team is grouped in Group C of the third round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers along with Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China. The team will face Japan and Saudi Arabia at the GBK Stadium on November 15 and 19, respectively.
