As the calendar year winds down, the Sentinel’s sports staff looks back on some of the top stories from 2024.
“We came this far. We’re not going to lose.”
What had already been a memorable and historic journey for the Cumberland Valley boys soccer team culminated with a rare and remarkable opportunity: the chance to clinch the program’s first state championship on the team’s home field.
At the end of a run that included a second consecutive District 3 Class 4A title and a wild double-overtime victory over Warwick in the PIAA semifinals, the Eagles collided with Parkland in a historic state championship game, the first for both programs, at Eagle View Stadium.
The showdown between the two teams with particularly stingy defenses, fittingly, dragged into overtime, and then a second overtime, in front of a packed crowd on the Cumberland Valley campus. In the 115th minute, the Eagles’ Chayse Snyder sent a ball into traffic. It bounced off a defender and ended up in the back of the Parkland net, sealing a 2-1 victory and setting off a celebration.
Jim Smith, the Eagles’ coach for the program’s first 27 seasons, presented the state-championship trophy to his successor, Matt Billman, and the triumphant Cumberland Valley squad. Billman would later be named Pennsylvania’s Class 4A coach of the year while junior center back Lex Radosavljevic received All-State recognition at the end of Cumberland Valley’s historic run.
Cumberland Valley’s victory in the state finals punctuated a boys soccer season that also saw East Pennsboro’s Steel Bayer lead the Mid-Penn Conference in scoring and Camp Hill capture the District 3 Class A title.
