The Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) is proud to announce Candia Ewing’s participation in the 2024 FIFA Unite Exchange Program, in Zurich, Switzerland and Paris, France. The program officially launched in 2023, available to a select number of member associations at any given time. This year, Candia stands out as the only female representative among a distinguished group of participants from Ghana, Uganda, Czech Republic, and Tajikistan. Each participant was meticulously selected by its Regional Development Team for this exceptional opportunity.
Candia’s presence at such an esteemed international platform underscores the advancements occurring in football administration, and serves as a beacon of hope for small associations, such as that of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The FIFA Unite Exchange Program aims to foster global collaboration and knowledge sharing within the football community, promoting the growth and development of the sport. Participants took part in a series of workshops, discussions, and activities aimed at enhancing their understanding of FIFA’s objectives and the support provided to member associations. Their stay at the Home of FIFA provided valuable networking opportunities. Additionally, participants presented individual projects to senior members of FIFA, each aiming to launch initiatives within their respective member associations.
Candia, in collaboration with her FIFA Peer Ruediger Muller (Head of Digital Content Products), shared her insights regarding the challenges faced within the TCIFA. The journey began with Ruediger’s visit to the Turks Islands Football Association, where he engaged in preliminary discussions and gained valuable perspectives. She  proposed strategies aimed at enhancing the visibility and engagement of football in her home country. Her project focused on leveraging low-cost and “no-cost” channels using a six step road-map to enhance the marketing and communications capabilities, amplifying the reach of football initiatives and aiming to inspire a new generation of participants and supporters.
Candia’s unique perspective and dedication were well-received by her peers, leading to meaningful exchanges that promise to foster long-term collaborations and support for the TCIFA. Her experience was markedly different when compared to relatively larger associations that focused on topics such as app development, enhancing football television services, and launching official branded merchandise and store installations. It is essential to recognise that smaller associations are still diligently working on establishing their foundational elements. She took great pride in discussing this matter!
TCIFA President Sonia Fulford commented, “Candia’s selection is a significant milestone, not only for her personal career, but for the TCIFA as a whole. This initiative is vital, as it plays a significant role in ensuring that football continues to thrive and foster community unity across the nation. The enthusiasm surrounding Candia’s involvement reflects a broader vision of growth and innovation within the TCIFA. I would also like to add that her journey is not only inspirational but also a catalyst for aspiring female leaders in the region, signalling to young women that there are no limits to what they can achieve in sports administration.”
“I am honored to have represented the Turks and Caicos Islands in the FIFA Unite Exchange Program,” said Candia. “This opportunity has allowed me to learn from others in the global football community and to bring back valuable insights that can help us grow the sport in our region. I have gained a deeper understanding.” she continued. “The discussions and workshops were incredibly enriching, and I’m eager to apply what I’ve learned to make a tangible difference. I believe that with the strategies we’ve developed, we can create more opportunities and nurture a passion for football that extends beyond the field. I’m grateful for this unique experience and excited to collaborate with my colleagues at the TCIFA to turn these insights into action, and also build on the valuable relationships created at the Home of FIFA.”
The TCIFA is excited about the potential impact of Candia’s participation in the FIFA Unite Exchange Program, and looks forward to her contributions upon her return.

PRESS RELEASE

FROM THE Turks & Caicos Islands Sports Commission

Sports Compliance & Support Manager Mrs Joddy Harvey and Deputy Director of Sports Mr Alvin Parker
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands — The Turks and Caicos Islands Sports Commission hosted a pivotal meeting on November 20, 2024, at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex, bringing together leaders from seven National Federations to address key challenges and opportunities in sports development. Representatives from rugby, football, basketball, swimming, softball, athletics, and the Commonwealth Games Association joined Sports Commission officials to discuss strategies for advancing athlete development and enhancing the governance of sports in TCI.
With over to 5,000 participants represented across the federations in conjunction with the Sports Commission, the meeting underscored the importance of a unified approach to maximize resources and improve athlete support. Discussions highlighted several challenges, including limited funding, the need for expert coaching, inadequate facilities (competition pool, additional tracks, fields, and gymnasiums), and insufficient athlete support services. Participants also raised concerns about the need for age-appropriate competitions, greater community buy-in, and stronger collaboration among coaches and sports administrators.
Director of the TCI Football Fedaration Mr Dane Ritchie
To address these challenges, the Sports Commission presented several strategic solutions:
The meeting emphasized the need for professionalism, national pride, and collaboration among federations to elevate TCI’s sports performance on regional and international stages.
Director of Sports, Jarrett Forbes, stated, “This meeting was a critical step in uniting our sports community and ensuring we make the best use of our resources to support our athletes. By working together strategically, we can create pathways for long-term success and inspire the next generation of athletes in TCI.”
Director of Sports Mr Jarrett Forbes
The Sports Commission remains committed to supporting National Federations and implementing initiatives that will foster excellence in sports and enhance national representation in international competitions.

Montego Bay, Jamaica, December 13, 2024 – Jamaica has welcomed over one million cruise passengers this year, contributing more than US$200 million to the local economy.
Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, made the disclosure while addressing the second annual Regal Awards at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, on Saturday (November 16).
“Jamaica’s cruise activities have stood [their] ground,” he said, noting the economic significance of cruise tourism to the nation.
According to the Minister, cruise tourism has the highest level of convertibility of the dollar, providing immediate economic benefits to local vendors and small business owners.
“While in other areas of tourism you have months, sometimes, to wait [on the dollar], with cruise tourism, it is instant convertibility,” Mr. Bartlett indicated.
“The dollar gets into their pockets immediately and the little man in Ocho Rios has an opportunity to go and pay his bills immediately after the cruise ship leaves in any day,” he added.
Mr. Bartlett underscored the transformative power of cruise tourism for towns like Ocho Rios, which now accounts for nearly one-third of all cruise passengers arriving in Jamaica.
He praised the efforts of global cruise partners and urged them to continue their support for Jamaica’s tourism industry.
The Regal Awards, organised by Jamaica Vacations (JamVac), celebrate the contributions of top travel advisors.
Eight high performing advisors were recognised, with the top five receiving special awards.
Mr. Bartlett lauded the advisors for their dedication and contributions to the development of Jamaica’s tourism industry.
“We want to let you know that you are awarded because you add value to Jamaica’s tourism, and cruise tourism in particular. The value that you have added has created important avenues for development of so many people,” the Minister said.
The top five honourees were: Stephanie Mays, Mindy Kleeburg, Carol Williams, Amanda Santana and Jacquetta White.
In her acceptance address, Ms. Kleeburg said travel advisors play a crucial role in ensuring seamless travel experiences for clients.
She assured that they will continue to support Jamaica’s tourism sector, adding that “it’s amazing being awarded.”

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands — On Thursday, 28 November 2024, the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College (TCICC) proudly hosted its 29th Annual Commencement Ceremony under the inspiring theme: “30 Years of Developing Our Nation-Builders: Honouring the Past, Embracing the Present, Inspiring the Future.” The event, held at the Yellowman and Sons Auditorium, marked a historic milestone with a record-breaking 194 graduates from the Associate, Bachelor’s, and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programmes.
Among the 194 graduates, 69 earned Associate degrees, 29 completed Bachelor’s degrees, and 96 were TVET trainees. Demonstrating academic excellence, 25% of the Associate degree graduates achieved Dean’s List recognition with GPAs above 3.5, while Bachelor’s graduates celebrated a range of honours classifications: 14% earned Upper Second-Class Honours, 69% achieved Lower Second-Class Honours, and 17% secured a Pass.
The ceremony was attended by an audience of over 500, including distinguished dignitaries such as Acting Governor, Her Excellency Anya Williams; Honourable Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education; Honourable Otis Morris, Minister of Home Affairs; and Honourable Josephine Connolly, Minister of Tourism. Also present were other past and current government officials, families and well-wishers of the graduands, as well as the dedicated staff and faculty of the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College.
The Honourable Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education, commended the graduating class and paid tribute to the institution’s rich legacy. She remarked, “As the Minister with responsibilities for Education, I was delighted to witness the graduation ceremony for the cohort of students who walked across the stage and received their certificate in their field of study.  Our students have been resilient in their efforts to empower themselves through education.  It was enlightening to witness the (ninety-six) 96 candidates who were certified and received their Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs) through our Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) from all our training sites on Providenciales, Grand Turk, South Caicos and the Prison.  It blessed my heart to witness twenty (20) inmates receiving their certification.  We truly believe that inmates who have access to and benefit from an education while in prison, develop marketable skills and are better equipped to reintegrate into society upon release.  With this initiative in place and being strengthened to offer additional areas of study, our inmates are more likely to secure stable employment, contribute to their communities, and break the cycle of recidivism.  As a Government, we have partnered with Invest TCI for entrepreneurial opportunities upon completion of our TVET programme.  Our boost in registration at TCICC with over 38% increase in enrollment, is a testament of our intent to building Human Capital through Free Access to our community college.”
In her remarks, TCICC President Dr. Candice Williams highlighted the College’s enduring impact on the community, stating, “TCICC’s achievements this year are a testament to our commitment to excellence—TVET certifications soared by 109%, the Dean’s List grew by 169%, and 80% of our students benefit from free tuition. These achievements are transformative. They represent lives changed, communities empowered, and a nation enriched.”
A unique highlight of the event was the graduation of 20 inmates from the HM Prison under TCICC’s TVET Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) programme. These graduates were praised by staff at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for showing remarkable transformation in attitude and outlook, emphasising the College’s commitment to inclusive education and societal reintegration.
The ceremony also featured an inspiring address from three former leaders of TCICC: Rev. Dr. Julia Williams, Dr. Hubert Fulford, and Mrs. Clara Gardiner. Each shared heartfelt reflections on the College’s legacy while issuing powerful charges to the graduates to embrace their roles as changemakers in the community.
As TCICC continues to celebrate its 30th anniversary, this year’s commencement ceremony serves as a resounding testament to its pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future.
