The Fifa World rankings were released on Thursday and see Bafana Bafana enter the top 10 in the continent.
Bafana Bafana have moved up in the FIFA rankings after a successful campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
FIFA has released its updated rankings, and under coach Hugo Broos, the team has risen from 60th to 57th place. South Africa secured qualification for the AFCON tournament with two matches to spare. Earlier this month, Bafana Bafana achieved a 2-0 victory over Uganda away and followed it up with a 3-0 win against South Sudan at Cape Town Stadium.
These two victories have led to an improvement of three positions in Bafana’s global ranking, allowing them to reclaim a spot in the top 10 in Africa, surpassing DR Congo.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers set to resume next year, South Africa will have another chance to improve their rankings. Broos’ team will play against Lesotho and Benin in March, aiming to solidify their standing at the top.
Bafana Bafana were ranked 66th in the world rankings last year before the Africa Cup of Nations. Broos’ men went on to reach the semi-finals of the continent tournament for the first time since 2000. The Fifa World rankings were released on Thursday and see South Africa enter the top 10 in Africa for the first time in years.
