Gold Country United soccer continues to make its mark in the NorCal Premier league, with multiple teams at or near the top of their brackets for the Fall 2024 season. GCU is the competitive arm of Gold Country Soccer and has 15 teams from U9 to U19. Both the 2006 GCU Boys team and the 2013 GCU Boys White team placed first in their divisions and the 2008 GCU Girls took second.
The 2006 team, coached by Matt Law and Ian Childs, took the U19 Region 6 Silver division with seven wins and only one loss. The team clinched their championship in a hard fought win Nov. 16. Head coach Law said that many of the boys have been playing together on the same competitive team since they were 8-years-old. This season the team included boys from the 2006-09 years, with a mix of players from Nevada Union, Bear River and Colfax high schools.
The 2013 boys, under head coach Trevor Crane, took their U12 Region 6 Silver 1 division with six wins and two losses. The highly competitive bracket came down to goal differential to determine their first place finish. GCU 2013 Boys stood out with 24 goals scored against competitors this season. The team has also stood out in its State Cup performance, making it to the quarter finals before being eliminated.
After an undefeated spring season in Silver, the 2008 GCU Girls advanced to the U17 Gold Division and finished in second place. The girls dominated in the early part of the season, before experiencing a few losses. Their final game Nov. 16 against Sacramento Soccer Alliance 08G Flair sealed their spot in second, with a dominant 6-1 victory. Head coach Rebecca Wayman was proud of the team’s performance.
“It was a really tight division, with most teams in close competition. We have a satisfying record for our first Gold season,” Wayman said.
Also of note, the 2011 GCU Boys, led by head coach Tamsyn Miller, finished in third place in the U14 Silver division.
Gold Country United has grown from a small handful of teams loosely connected to a competitive league of 15 teams, comprising 11 boys and four girls teams. Gold Country Soccer League works to develop recreational soccer players interested in moving into the next level of competition. GCSL is the largest youth sports organization in western Nevada County with more than 1,200 kids participating in soccer during the fall 2024 season, in both the recreational and competition leagues, said GCSL Executive Director Monique Derenia.
GCU will host a Team Formation Day Jan. 11 for the Norcal Premier Spring Season that runs mid-February through May.
